"John Slonneger, one of the enterprising farmers of Tazewell County, now living on section 1, Morton Township, claims Ohio as the state of his nativity, his birth having occurred in Butler County, December 12, 1839. His paternal grandfather was a German farmer of limited means. In his family were the following children: Barbara, wife of David SUMMERS; Mary, wife of John Schatz; Fannie, who married Michael Oswold, and after his death became the wife of Jacob Smith; Peter; John, of Ohio; Christian and Jacob."
"In the common schools of Ohio, the subject of this sketch acquired his education, and with his father remained until eighteen years of age, when he began working as a farm hand. He was thus employed until twenty-four years of age, at which time he married Magdelene SUMMERS, a native of the Buckeye State, and a daughter of Peter SUMMERS, who was born in Alsace, France. To them were born two children, one yet living, Alfred F., who makes his home near Spring Bay.
For about a year Mr. Slonneger rented land. In 1869 he came to Illinois, locating in McLean County, where for three years he worked by the month. His first wife having died three years after their marriage, he then wedded Mary Belsey, daughter of Peter and Lena (Springer) Belasey. They then made a trip to Germany, in hopes of benefiting his wife's health, and spent one year and twelve days abroad. They then returned to McLean County, and in 1877 came to the farm on which Mr. Slonneger now makes his home. His wife departed the life in 1878. Three children were born of that union: Eddie and Maggie, now deceased; and Bertha."

EARLY HISTORY OF WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS, Tazewell County Reporter, 1929:
"Two of the early pioneer families of Washington were the Slonnegers and the Birketts. John Slonneger came to Illinois and settled south of Washington. He and his wife, Barbara, had five sons and one daughter.
One of the sons, Chester, married Pearl Birkett December 1907. They lived on a farm south of Washington, where their five children were born. Irvin and Mildred live in Peoria; Clarence and Dorothy are now deceased; Ethel still lives in Washington. In 1922 they all moved into town. Mr. Chester Slonneger at one time managed a grocery store. He was an alderman, and he also served on the school board. He was a member of the Washington Muncipal Band for 62 years. Phoebe K. ZIMMERMAN
Phoebe appears in the 1860 Butler County, Ohio, Census as Bena (a common nickname for Jacobina, of which Phoebe was apparently an Anglicized version).
Phoebe ZIMMERMAN's 1857 birth record is interesting, as it erroneously lists Barbara BOWER as her mother, when in fact, Barbara BOWER was her grandmother (she was about 61 years old in 1857, so could hardly have been a mother at that age!).
Another interesting error is that an 8-month old daughter Harriet C. was listed for Joseph and Phoebe Augspurger in the 1880 Butler County, Ohio, Census. Yet subsequent census records (1900, 1910, and 1920) show that this was actually a son named Harry C. instead.

Johannes SCHUNK
At the time of Johannes SCHUNCK's birth, the province of Bavaria included the area where Webenheim is located. Today, Webenheim is in the Rheinland, and some maps show it to be in the Saarland. It is just a few miles north of the French border and several miles west of the city of Zweibrucken.
Johannes SCHUNCK was baptized 2 March 1851 in the Lutheran Chruch at Webenheim, the son of Christian SCHUNCK IV and Sophia BENDER. Their ancestors can be traced back through the Webenheim church records to the beginnings of those records in the late 1600's.
According to the 1900 Census of Tazewell County, Illinois, Johannes immigrated to the U.S. in 1868. His arrival in New York on the ship ATALANTA on 27 April 1868 is noted in Glazier & Filby's GERMANS TO AMERICA, Volume 20. His age was listed as 17 there, and he was one of eight teenagers listed together, all from France. Two of them were Ludwig PAULI and Catherine MOSCHEL, their surnames both being surnames in Johannes' ancestry in Webenheim.
According to Johannes' granddaughter Ruth (Schunk) Shelton, he left Germany to avoid the military draft. The German spelling of "Schunck" seems to have been shortened, either intentionally or inadvertently, to "Schunk," and of course the German "Johannes" was anglicized to "John." Census records list John as a farm laborer and a day laborer.
At the death of his first wife, Christina ZIMMERMAN, in 1888, John decided to raise his three children (Carl, Fannie, and Leo) himself, although Christina's sisters had offered to take them. His second wife, Lottie Soady, already had a child, Elinor, born in 1890, from a previous marriage (husband's name unknown).
John SCHUNK died at his son Carl's home in Valley Junction, Iowa, which is present-day West Des Moines. His and Christina's marker in the Roberts Cemetery just west of Morton, Illinois, is a high-rise monument, the tallest in the cemetery. It was placed there by their daughter Fannie.
