Descendants of Jacob ZIMMERMAN (1735-1806)

Notes

6. Christian ZIMMERMAN

Christian ZIMMERMAN was born 10 March 1790 on the Hochburg estate near Sexau, in Baden, Germany, into an Amish Mennonite family.  He was the son of Christian ZIMMERMAN (born ca 1768, Freiburg, Baden, Germany; died 9 November 1805, Bourgfelden, Alsace, France) and Elizabeth KONIG (born ca 1769; died 13 December 1833, Bourgfelden, Alsace, France).

For further information on the Hochburg Mennonite Congregation, see AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY, by Hermann Guth, 1995, Chatper 6.

Christian ZIMMERMAN married Catherine SOMMER in 1824 in Bourgfelden, but there is some mystery about his wife's first name, as two of their children's birth records identified their mother as Barbe SOMMER.  THE HISTORY OF TAZEWELL COUNTY, ILLINOIS, 1879, by Chapman, also states that the mother of Jacob ZIMMERMAN (born 1829) was Barbara SOMMERS.

Bourgfelden is now part of the French city of Saint Louis, which is located where France, Germany, and Switzerland meet.  East of Saint Louis, across the Rhine River, is Baden, Germany, and just south of Saint Louis is Basel, Switzerland.

The passenger list of the ship HEBREW, which brought them to New York in 1836, lists Christian's wife as Catherine, with an age of 34, which matches the 11 March 1802 birthdate of Catherine SOMMER (daughter of Johannes SOMMER and Barbara STOCKI).

Christian apparently died sometime between 1840 (when he was listed on the 1840 Census of Butler County, Ohio) and 1850 (when his children were listed in the Butler County Census, apparently with their mother Barbara).  It should be noted, however, that Barbara's age was listed as 54, which does not match an 1802 birthdate.

Barbara married second to John BOWER (BOOR) in 1852, and she apparently died between 1860 (when she was listed on the Butler County Census) and 1870 (when John BOWERS was listed in the Butler County Census without her).  Again, Barbara's age in the 1860 Census (65) does not match an 1802 birthdate.  So it is possible that Barbara and Catherine SOMMER were two different wives.
