1.
Lewis WRIGHT
It is speculated that the father of Lewis Wright may have been Isham Wright. Isham Wright was listed in the 1810 Pendleton County, Kentucky, Census as over age 45 (thus born before 1765). Isham Wright appeared in the Clark County, KY, tax lists of 1794 and 1797. He first appeared on the tax lists in Pendleton County, KY, in 1802.
On 5 September 1793, Isham Wright married Rebecca McKinney in Clark County, KY. If Lewis Wright's year of birth (1790) and place of birth (Virginia) are correct (and the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Census are all consistent on these two facts), then Rebecca McKinney was not Lewis' mother. No record of an earlier marriage for Isham Wright has been found, however.
On 27 March 1813, Francis McKinney of Robertson County, Tennessee, sold 100 acres on the Licking River in Pendleton County, Kentucky, to Lewis Wright. The deed was witnessed by Robert Forsythe, John Forsythe, and Henry Colvin. On the same date, with the same witnesses, Francis McKinney sold 150 acres to Rebecca Wright of Pendleton County. The 1793 Clark County marriage bond of Isham Wright and Rebecca McKinney identified Francis McKinney as Rebecca's father. On 29 December 1813, Rebecca Wright sold 25 acres on the Licking River to Lewis Wright.
1813 was the last year in which Isham Wright's name appeared on the Pendleton County, KY, tax lists. In 1814 and 1815, Rebecca Wright's name appeared instead. And on 16 September 1815, Rebecca Wright was married to John McCarty in Pendleton County.
Only two of Isham Wright's children have been identified with certainty. Mary Wright married Daniel Long in Pendleton County, KY, 25 December 1813, and the marriage bond identified Rebecca Wright as Mary's mother. Elizabeth Wright Stubbs, widow, age 51, died in Livingston County, KY, in 1853, and Isom and Rebecca Wright were listed as her parents. (Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 Livingston County, KY, Census, as age 49, born in Kentucky.)
Another possible child of Isham and Rebecca Wright was Francis Wright who appeared on the 1850 Pendleton County, Kentucky, Census as age 50, born KY, with his wife Susanna. In the 1850 Pendleton County Census, there were two families headed by a 27-year-old Isham Wright. It is known that the Isham W. Wright with wife Martha and children George and Sarah Jane was Lewis Wright's son. It is speculated that the other Isham Wright (with wife Eliza, and children Sarah, Elizabeth, David, Melissa, and Angeline) was the son of Francis Wright (probably Lewis Wright's brother).
The only other Wright appearing in early Pendleton County tax lists was a Samuel Wright, who first appeared there in 1799. Samuel Wright and Isham Wright were the only two Wrights listed on the 1810 Pendleton County, KY, Census, and both were listed as over 45. It is speculated that Samuel Wright may have been a brother to Isham Wright.
This Samuel Wright was located in Adams County, Illinois, in the 1850 Census, and was listed as age 94, born in Maryland, thus born about 1756. He was living with his daugher Elizabeth (Betsy) Norton, widow of Henry Norton (they married in Pendleton County in 1812), and according to the census data, Elizabeth was born about 1791 in Virginia. On the next page of the 1850 Adams County, IL, Census was Samuel's daugther Nancy, widow of Henry C. Davis (they married in Livingston County, KY, in 1822). According to the 1850 census data, Nancy was born about 1796 in Kentucky. One other child of Samuel Wright was Delilah Wright who married Robert John Rafferty in Pendleton County in 1816 (marriage bond identified Samuel as her father).
The 1810 Pendleton County, Kentucky, Census listed Isham Wright with 8 children and Samuel Wright with 5 children, so this still leaves several of their children unaccounted for.
