Descendants of Ozias WHEELER (ca 1799-1869)

Notes

1. Ozias WHEELER

It is not entirely clear when and where Ozias Wheeler was born.  The following excerpt states that he died in 1869 at age 66, which would make for a birth year of about 1803:

HISTORY OF BOURBON, SCOTT, HARRISON AND NICHOLAS COUNTIES,
KENTUCKY, by Perrin, 1882:
pp. 688-689:
"JOHN H. WHEELER, tobacco dealer, P.O. Oddville; was born in North Carolina, Aug. 25, 1825; son of Ozias and Sarah (Fults) WHEELER; he born in Vermont, a farmer, and dying in 1869, aged sixty-six years; she, born in North Carolina, in 1799, and dying in 1867; they had seven children, John H. being the oldest."

However, Ozias' age was reported as 54 in the 1850 Census and as 64 in the 1860 Census (thus, born ca 1796).  The 1830 Census had him in the 30-40 age bracket, and the 1840 Census had him in the 40-50 age bracket, both being consistent with a birth year of 1800 or earlier.

Ozias' place of birth in both the HISTORY OF BOURBON, SCOTT, HARRISON AND NICHOLAS COUNTIES, KENTUCKY excerpt above and in the 1850 Census was listed as Vermont.  This is consistent with Vermont recorded as "father's birthplace" for son John in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 Census; for daughter Amelia in the 1880 Census; and for son George in the 1880 and 1910 Census.  However, Connecticut was listed as "father's birthplace" for son Lewis in the 1880 and 1920 Census; for daughter Amelia in the 1900 Census; and for daughter Mary in the 1880 Census.  Thus, it seems likely that there was some Connecticut connection.  Perhaps Ozias was born in Vermont and grew up in Connecticut.

Nothing is known about his parents or any siblings, nor about his whereabouts prior to his marriage to Sarah Fults in Stokes County, North Carolina, in 1824.  Sons John and Lewis were born in North Carolina (John in 1825, and Lewis in 1827), and Ozias Wheeler' name first appeared in tax lists in Harrison County, Kentucky, in the year 1830.  No relatives of either Ozias or Sarah have ever been determined to have settled with them in Kentucky.

Sarah FULTS

The excerpt from HISTORY OF BOURBON, SCOTT, HARRISON, AND NICHOLAS COUNTIES, KENTUCKY, by Perrin, 1882, pp. 688-689 states that Sarah (Fults) Wheeler died in 1867.

However, Ozias Wheeler married Eliza Ann Rose in 1865 in Harrison County, so Sarah most likely died between 1864 and 1865.  A land deed from Ozias Wheeler and Sarah his wife was written on 1 Jun 1864 and is recorded in Harrison County, Kentucky, Deed Book 30, pages 128-129.

Ozias' second wife Eliza Ann was apparently the wife who died in 1867, as her inventory was reported 21 Feb 1867 and is recorded in Harrison County, Kentucky, Will Book I, page 272.
