STURGES, aged 57 on May 15th last, died at his residence, No. 502 Fifth avenue, Girard, at 2:40 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of five months of dysentery and other complications.  He is survived by five children, Mrs. C.C. Boyd [Byrd] of Columbus; Mrs. R.Q. HOLLEMAN of Girard; Mr. George STURGESS of Birmingham, Alabama; and Masters Lonie and Selma STURGES of Girard.  He is also survived by one brother Mr. Elie STURGES of Texas and two sisters Mrs. Dunn of Texas and Mrs. Calhoun of Anniston, Alabama.  He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church and was an old Confederate veteran, having entered the service at the age of 16 years.  Interment was at Girard cemetery.

However, Mrs. Lucile (Holleman) Lowder (now deceased), granddaughter of George Morehouse STURGES, reported that most of George's siblings married Dunn brothers and sisters.  It is known that two of George's siblings married children of Henry and Elizabeth Dunn (who were all listed in the 1860 Muscogee County, GA, Census, p. 371), so it seems likely that Clarricy STURGES (born January 1850) in the 1900 Panola County, MS, Census is the same person as 10-year-old Clarissa Dunn in the 1860 Muscogee County Census.

Larry Gordon (largordo at rocketmail dot com) has documents which show that Clarissa Sturges attempted to obtain a Civil War pension as the widow of Marcus Sturges.  It is believed that this was a fradulent attempt by Charles Sturges' widow, further suggesting that she was a sister to Marcus' widow Rhoda (Dunn) Sturges).
