14. David SOMMERS

A HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHICAL CYCLOPAEDIA OF BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO, Western Biographical Publishing Company, Cincinnati, 1882:
p. 573:
  "David SOMMER was born in Montgomery County, April 26, 1823.  His parents, Peter and Anna, came to this county in 1839.  He was married on the 22d of April 1850 to Barbara KINTSINGER, daughter of Joseph and Magdalen KINTSINGER, who settled in this county in 1819.  Mr. and Mrs. SOMMER have had ten children, all happily spared to them.  Jacob A. was born March 28, 1851; Magdalen, January 30, 1853; Joseph K., April 8, 1855; Peter, October 16, 1857; John G., December 8, 1859; Anna R., April 15, 1862; Mary Ann, October 9, 1864; Cynthia J., May 10, 1867; Kate A., November 24, 1869; William L., September 6, 1872.  Jacob A. lives in Franklin, Warren County as does his brother Joseph K.  Mr. SOMMER was for ten years treasurer of Milford Township.  He is a farmer, and has been successful in his calling."

Peter KINSINGER

  It should be noted that there were two Peter KINSINGERs enumerated in the 1850 census of Butler County, Ohio, both as age 23.  This Peter is the one who appears on page 361B in the Peter Sommers household, along with his wife Elizabeth KINSINGER (a daughter of Peter Sommers).  Elizabeth appears to have been widowed by the time of the 1870 census in Butler County.

  It is the author's guess that this Peter was a son of Johannes and Christina, because all of Johannes' brothers appear to be ruled out as Peter's father.

John SLONNEGER

  "John Slonneger, one of the enterprising farmers of Tazewell County, now living on section 1, Morton Township, claims Ohio as the state of his nativity, his birth having occurred in Butler County, December 12, 1839.  His paternal grandfather was a German farmer of limited means.  In his family were the following children: Barbara, wife of David SUMMERS; Mary, wife of John Schatz; Fannie, who married Michael Oswold, and after his death became the wife of Jacob Smith; Peter; John, of Ohio; Christian and Jacob."
  "In the common schools of Ohio, the subject of this sketch acquired his education, and with his father remained until eighteen years of age, when he began working as a farm hand.  He was thus employed until twenty-four years of age, at which time he married Magdelene SUMMERS, a native of the Buckeye State, and a daughter of Peter SUMMERS, who was born in Alsace, France.  To them were born two children, one yet living, Alfred F., who makes his home near Spring Bay.
  For about a year Mr. Slonneger rented land.  In 1869 he came to Illinois, locating in McLean County, where for three years he worked by the month.  His first wife having died three years after their marriage, he then wedded Mary Belsey, daughter of Peter and Lena (Springer) Belasey.  They then made a trip to Germany, in hopes of benefiting his wife's health, and spent one year and twelve days abroad.  They then returned to McLean County, and in 1877 came to the farm on which Mr. Slonneger now makes his home.  His wife departed the life in 1878.  Three children were born of that union:  Eddie and Maggie, now deceased; and Bertha."

Barbara KINSINGER

  Barbara KINSINGER is very likely a daughter of Johannes and Christina KINSINGER, because the 1860 census of Butler County, Ohio, enumerates a C. KINSINGER, female, age 64, as living with Barbara and Christian Zimmerman's family.  This is, in all likelihood, Barbara's mother Christina.

  According to Barbara's great-granddaughter Elizabeth Schunk, Barbara was removed from the Mennonite church for tending to a sick neighbor.   Elizabeth Schunk also remembers being told that Barbara had been married a short time and widowed prior to her marriage to Christian ZIMMERMAN, but no other evidence of such a marriage has been uncovered.

  Barbara lists "Biern, Germany" as her birthplace in the 1870 census of Butler County, Ohio.  This may have been the census-taker's spelling of "Bayern," the German version of Bavaria.  The Rheinland-Pfalz (Palatinate) area of Germany was also known as Rheinish Bavaria at that time.
