"Henry Stanton Carman, son of Joshua and Mary (CROWL) Carman and grandson of Seth Carman, was b 21 Feb 1862, d 28 Jul 1898 Riley. On 8 Mar 1884 he m Lilly Bell Hudson, b 24 Oct 1867, d 4 Jun 1901 Riley, dau of Calvin Wilbur and Matilda (Miller) Hudson and gdau of Absalom W and Mary (Fowler) Hudson.
Joshua Carman was b in OH in 1825. Mary (CROWL) Carman's father came from MD and her mother from PA. Absalom Hudson ws an early American explorer from OH. Calvin Hudson moved to Leonardville and operated a store until 1900. He then owned a farm and farmed on Mill Creek.
Henry Carman came to KS with his folks who settled in Ogden Twp, Riley Co in 1864. He was a farmer and lived on a farm two miles east of Riley. He was a horse trader too. His dau Alpha said he never went to Riley or town and came home with the same two horses. She said one time the family went to town with her dad and he unhitched horses and traded three times before they got home. The family was of the Presbyterian faith. Henry and Lilly Bell both died by the time Alpha was 15 years old. The children went to live with relatives until they were through school. The court appointed guardians until they could work out or get married. Alpha lived with her Aunt Elta Pierce until she had finished grade school. Then she worked in homes as housekeeper or hired girl until she m Louis Stadel. They farmed east of Riley until 1911 when Louis was talked into investing in land to farm at Eaglelake TX. They lived there for five years then moved back to be closer to Louis' family. They farmed at Wamego, then sold and moved to a farm west of Manhattan in Eureka Valley community. In 1942 when the federal government took their farm to enlarge Fort Riley Reservation, the moved to Manhattan on Fremont Street.

"William Wallace Emmons, son of Jacob and Deborah (Milner) Emmons and grandson of Thomas and Mary (Davis) Emmons was born 1 Jun 1832 in East Rochester, Columbiana County, OH and died 21 Jul 1912 at St. George, buried there. He moved with his parents to Fairfield IL ca 1840 where they lived until 1847 then returned to OH where he married Sarah Ann CROWL.
They came to KS Territory in 1857 first settling in Lawrence, where they lived two months. From there they went to St. George, where his wife and child died in childbirth. He married 29 Apr 1858 Louisa Wilson, daughter of Samuel Engle Oakford and Sarah (Jordan) Wilson.
Louisa Wilson was born in Cabbel Co VA 30 Jun 1838 and moved with her parents near Indianapolis IN where they lived until 1857 when they came to St. George. She and William Emmons were married by Rev A G Rowell. She died 15 Dec 1900 and both William and Louisa were buried in the St George Cemetery.
William Wallace Emmons enlisted in the army at Ft Leavenworth 26 Aug 1862 and was mustered into the 11th KS Infantry, Company K on 14 Sept 1862. He fought in the Battle of Ft Smith, Van Buren and Lexington and was then sent to quiet the Indians. After fighting Indians, he and his men were sent to Ft Leavenworth on foot from a point between Julesburg (now CO) and Ft Laramie (now WY). They wrapped their feet in gunny sacks as their shoes would not last. He was mustered out of service as a 2nd LT 15 Sept 1865.

"Hon. Lawrence W. CROWL.
A compendium of Pottawatomie County biographies would be incomplete without a sketch of the above-named gentleman, who is one of the oldest of the "old settlers" now living, having come to Kansas during the troublous times preceding the late Civil War. He has been closely identified with the history of the county as an agriculturalist and land owner, a merchant, and a public official, and in each and every capacity has fulfilled the duties incumbent upon him in a manner alike creditable to his physical, mental and moral capacities.
Mr. CROWL was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Feb. 22, 1834, and being the son of a farmer, early received a practical training in the life of an agriculturalist. He was the recipient of good educational advantages in the schools of that county, and home training at the parental fireside. His parents removed to Illinois while he was yet in his teens, and after remaining in that State a year, he returned to his native county, and engaging in a sawmill business, followed that occupation for about five years. He was married Oct. 16, 1857, and the following month he and his wife came West and took up some raw land in St. George Township, this county. He first built a log house, and began improving and cultivating the farm, continuing his work thereon until after the breaking out of the late Civil War. Their neighbors were for some time scattered at rather remote intervals, and life on the frontier had its privations and discouragements, but Mr. CROWL had not only his own spirit to sustain him, but the companionship of a lady who nobly shared in the trials of those early years.
Mr. CROWL was an earnest patriot and during the struggle for American unity he entered Company L, 11th Kansas Cavalry, serving as Orderly Sergeant, his time being mainly spent attached to the Army of the Frontier under Gen. Blunt. The date of his enlistment was Feb. 24, 1863, from which time he served until the close of the war, being mustered out and receiving an honorable discharge in October, 1865. Returning to St. George Township where his wife and three children remained, he engaged in merchandising, continuing so employed till 1869, when he again became a resident of the farming district. He owned five farms of about 100 acres, and live in the county until 1886, when he moved to Westmoreland, and again turned his attention to a mercantile business.
In 1870, Mr. CROWL was elected County Treasurer and served the full term of two years, though he did not leave his rural home. In 1883, he was elected Sheriff, and qualified for the office in January, 1884, serving as acceptably as he had done as Treasurer. At the close of his term of public service he became a citizen of the county seat, and in the spring of 1889, was chosen to fill the Mayor's chair. Mr. CROWL was one of the first county commissioners, and is the only one of them now living. He acted in that capacity for four or five years, and also in the early day was Chairman of the Board in St. George Township.
The wife of Hon. Mr. CROWL was in her maidenhood, Miss Mary E. Emmons. She was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, a daughter of Jacob Emmons, a farmer of that county, where she lived until her marriage and departure with her husband for the frontier. Their happy union has been blessed in the birth of seven children, four of whom still live. They are: Florence, now Mrs. W.P. Sheehan of San Francisco, Cal.; Laura, Mrs. C.B. Brown, whose husband is the present partner of Mr. CROWL in the mercantile business; Nellie; and Harry, a stenographer of Arkansas City, Kan.
The parents of our subject were John and Lydia Ann (Majors) CROWL, of the State of Maryland, the father having been born in Frederick County, in 1804. They grew to maturity in their native State, and were there married, removing after a few years to Ohio. Mr. CROWL, Sr., was a farmer, and as a pioneer of Columbiana County, he cleared a farm, on which he lived till early in the '50's, when with his family he went to Illinois. There he located in Hancock County, and continued his former occupation, dying in that county in 1869, aged sixty-six years. The mother had departed this life in the Buckeye State 1846. Their family consisted of ten children, eight of whom lived to maturity.
Hon. L.W. CROWL is well and favorably known throughout the county as a man of probity, intelligence and ability, and as such receives the respect of his fellow citizens. He belongs to the G.A.R., and the Masonic order. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church."

"Mrs. Louise Margary LOWDER died Saturday afternoon at 1:10 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.F. Bunzel, 415 West Seventh Avenue, of heart trouble. Louise Margery CROWEL was born December 17, 1843, in Columbiana County, Ohio. She lived there till she was 16, when she moved to Illinois, and was married to G.W. LOWDER in 1863. In 1870 the LOWDERs moved to Kansas, settling at Delphos. They later moved to Riley County, and Mrs. LOWDER came to Emporia three years ago with her daughter. She is survived by a son and two daughters, Mrs. M.F. Bunzel, of Emporia; Mrs. M. Martin, of Los Angeles, Calif., and J.E. LOWDER, of Peoria, Ill. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since she was 16."
