THE MAGERS FAMILY BY JAMES V. MAGERS
(written in 1921)
My Grandfather, Lourence Magers, was born in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland.  He had four brothers, namely Peter, William, John, and Nathan, and one sister, Mary, who married one Joseph Arnold, all native born Americans, of whose lives or histories I have been unable thus far to learn anything authentic.  I am of the opinion, however, that all of the "Magers" now in this country are their lineal descendents.
My Grandfather, Lourence Magers, married Mary Whyte, and lived in Baltimore, and in later years lived in McSherrystown, Adams County, Pa., where he died on May 11, 1839, aged over 60 years, and was buried in Canawaga Cemetery in that village.  (Grave is located in the 3rd. row behind the Sacred Heart Bascilica). His wife, my Grandmother, died some time previously.  At the time of my Grandfather's death, his son Peter and daughter Henrietta were at home, and a woman by the name of Lena Strousbaugh kept house for them.  The children of my grandparents were:
1st. Lydia, who married John Crowl. This family lived in Stark County Ohio, and afterwards moved to the State of Indiana.  They had a number of children, but can remember the names of two of them, John Thomas and Appolonia.
2nd. Sally, who married a man by the name of Linn, who lived in Maryland near Washington D.C. in 1863, I met one of their children whose name was Samuel Davis Linn, and who lived at Georgetown D.C.  He was a remarkable business man and quite wealthy.  He had three children at that time: Frank, who became a physician; Eddie, a law student; and Betty, who married a Mr. Simpson.
3rd. Peter, who lived in Baltimore.  He was married twice, and had one child by his first marriage.  His second marriage was to a lady whom I knew as Aunt Jemima.  Their children were Camilla, who afterward became a member of Mt. Carmel Convent near Boston. (She became a very famous Carmelite being one of the first American novices.  She died at Rochester N.Y. at the advanced age of 92 or 93, the oldest Carmelite in the U.S.  She was known as Sister Mary Beatrix of the Holy Spirit.)  Minnie, Tillie, Edward, and Charles, whose last known residence was Chicago.  Uncle Peter and Jemima both died in Baltimore.
4th. Nancy, who married Anthony Strausbaugh.  To them were born William, Edwin, Augustus, Lewis, Agnes and Alexis and Louis. The latter married and resided in Allentown, Pa.

(Family listed on another page.) He died Feb. 25, 1895 in Tiffin, 0. and was buried in St. Marys Cemetery in Tiffin, Ohio, Seneca County.
8th. Thomas, who worked with my father at the millwright trade when we lived in Stark County.  He went to the Mexican War about 1846, and to McSherrystown, Pa., in about 1853, where he died and was buried in Conawaga Cemetery at that place. (He died at the age of 36, was never married and died May 15, 1862, is buried 3rd. row behind the Sacred Heart Bascilica.)
(The following is a story of #7 Joseph)
He lived with his parents until his mothers death, at which time he was placed in an orphanage at Conawaga Church in McSherrystown, until of proper age, when he was apprenticed (according to the custom of that time) to learn the millwright trade.  After learning that trade, he completed a course at the milling trade, thus qualifying himself to build a mill and grind flour.
He came to Canton, Stark County, Ohio in 1832, where he worked at his trade of millwright.  He was a good workman and there was a great demand for his services.  He built and helped to build nearly all the mills in Stark and adjoining counties.  He built the mill at Zoar, Ohio, for the Bymiller Community located there.  In 1837 he went back east to visit his father and after a brief visit, he returned to Canton, Ohio.  He was married to Mary Ann Sneeringer, a native of Adams County Pa., but at that time residing in Canton with her mother and a brother, Henry.  They were married at Louisville, near Canton, by Rev. Father Wortz on the 27th day of April, 1841.  They began housekeeping at North Industry, four miles south of Canton.  He bought forty acres of land, known at that time as the Merino Farm.  They lived there a short time, when he sold his farm and moved to Canton and lived there until 1852, when, on account of poor    health, he was obliged to quit working at his trade; sold his property there, came to Seneca County, Obio and bought the Charles Hedges farm, six and one half miles south of Tiffin on the Plank Road.  On the 11th day of October of that year, he moved his family and effects overland, to this farm.  Joseph Conaghan, Stephen J. Pecher and Peter Kintz, who were residents of Seneca and Wyandot Counties at that time assisted in moving with their teams.
My father and mother lived there for a short time, when he sold this farm to William Bartlett.  He bought the Groff farm on the Baseline Road, one half mile east of McCutchenville in Wyandotte Co.  Moved there in March 1853, after living there about two years, he sold this farm, moved to McCutchenville, Ohio, lived there about two months, bought the Charles DeWitt farm one and a half miles east of Carey, on the Tymochtee Road, lived there until 1859, when he sold that farm and bought the George Hoffman faxm, consisting of 130 acres, on the New Haven road, just east of and adjoining the village of Berwick, in Seneca County.  He lived there until 1871.  He sold that farm to Charles Foster & Co. and bought the Nicholas Umstead farm on the Portland road, two and a half miles east of Tiffin.  This farm he retained to the end of his life, living thereon until a few years before his death, when he moved to Tiffin, corner of Miami and Franklin Streets catacorner from St. Marys Church, where he died on Feb. 25, 1895.  (Joseph Seifert owned the farm at the time of this writing-1921)
After coming to Seneca County, his health became much better. Besides superintending his farm work, he engaged in the stock business, buying and selling sheep mostly.  Also built a grist mill at Carey, Ohio, one at Vanlue, and one at Berwick, besides overhauling and repairing a number of gristmills and sawmills.  While living at Berwick, he held the township offices of Trustee, Assessor, and Justice of the Peace, and in 1868 was elected Commissioner of Seneca County, and held that office for two terms, and was afterward elected Infirmary Director of the same county.
   His children were:
   1. James Vincent, born May 17, 1842.  Married Mary Adelsperger in New Riegel on Jan 7, 1868.  To them were born Charles Francis, Olive Idella, Camilla Edith, and Victor Louis.  Orville Venatius and Joseph died in infancy.
   2. Elnorah Appalonia was born June 29, 1844 in Stark County, died Nov. 29, 1847 in Stark County.
    3. Zachary Taylor was born Feb. 16, 1847, Stark County, died July 28, 1847, in Stark County.
   4. Thomas Louis was born Oct. 24, 1848, Stark County.
   5. Emma Frances was born March 10, 1851, was a member of the Ursuline Order,     Tiffin, 0., under the name of Sister Mary Pius, died in Toledo at the Ursuline Convent.
   6. Joseph Lawrence was born Jan. 1, 1856 in Wyandotte County, and died March 3, 1856.
   7. Alexius Miles was born March 28, 1857.  Mary Augusta, a twin, born March 28, 1857, died March 24, 1860 in Wyandotte County.

   9. Francis Elias was born April 7, 1861, was married Sept. 26, 1887 to Aurelia Coena Hoote, daughter of Conrad Hoote and Mary Jane Dickey.
   10. Charles Augustine was born Jan. 26, 1865 and died Feb. 26, 1865 in Seneca County.
