  JOHN L.D. LOWDER, a farmer and stock-raiser of Johnson county, was born in Giles County, Tennessee, February 13, 1832.  He moved with his father to Lawrence county, Missouri, in 1837, where he was reared to farm life and educated in the common schools.  In 1859 he belonged to a company of rangers in Texas, fighting Indians on the frontier.  The company to which he belonged killed and scalped many savages in the western part of the State, which was not then surveyed into counties.  It was all a wilderness, with here and there a stockman.  On one occasion fifteen Indians attacked a house in which the only man was Mr. Lowder, who succeeded in driving them away.  They ran to another house, captured four women, killed two of them and kept two over night, abusing them and turning them free next morning, barefoot, etc.  Mr. Lowder's party followed the Indians up and killed three of them, who had the scalps of the whites they had killed.  Thus has Mr. Lowder been all over western Texas.
In 1869 he removed to Sangamon county, Illinois, and in 1867 to Texas, first locating in Eastland county, next in Bosque county, and then in Johnson county, where he now resides.  He owns 385 acres of land, 230 of which is under cultivation.  He has been a trader and farmer all through life, and during the gold excitement at Pike's Peak, Mr. Lowder, fitted up several wagons and started for that locality; but after his arrival he found no gold, and lost money on the trip.  He is a member of the Farmers' Alliance, of the Grange, N.F. of T., the Missionary Baptist Church, is a Master Mason, and has served his lodge as Worshipful Master four terms, was Deputy Sheriff of his county four years, and was a member of a company of men who were hunting horse-thieves.
  Mr. Lowder was married in 1852, to Miss Martha, a daughter of James Gibson, a native of Missouri.  They had three children: James, George, deceased, and one who died in infancy.  Mr. Lowder was again married in 1859, to Miss Martha T. Allen, a native of Illinois, and they had five children, viz.: Martha E., John W., Samuel H., Leathel J., and one who died in infancy.  The wife and mother died in 1871, and Ocober 19, 1876, Mr. Lowder married Miss Mary B., a daughter of Samuel Hughes, a native of Tennessee, and now a resident of Johnson county, Texas.  To this union has been born six children, namely: Walter V., deceased; Thomas B., deceased October 12, 1878; Robert E.L., born August 12, 1878; Eddie A., June 28, 1881; Lula, April 18, 1884; Beulah, November 15, 1887; and Callah S., January 20, 1890."
