Interview of Ruth Lynch Capps by Wanda Maker:
[On April 27, 1979, this story was told to us by Ruth Lynch CAPPS, who resides at 414 West Grant, Pittsfield, IL. She is 83 years old, is a granddaughter of Joseph and Ruth LOWDER and daughter of George LYNCH and Amanda LOWDER. She owned the old LOWDER homestead at one time, but sold it a few years ago. She also had a picture of Joseph and Ruth LOWDER up until 2 years ago, when she sent it to her brother Lester LYNCH, P.O. Box 904, Mt. Angel, Oregon.]
"Joseph and his son, John, went to California with some neighbors during the California Gold Rush. They prepared a wagon to float the rivers. Joseph LOWDER returned to Pike County about 4 ½ years later, while John stayed in California. They believe John was killed in a mining town, because he was never heard from again. Joseph returned to Pike County by boat, crossing the Isthmus of Panama and going to New York City, then taking a train from there to Pike County."
[While in New York, Joseph had a brooch made from some of the California gold, set with a ruby red stone, and Ruth CAPPS still has it and had it on the day we talked to her. She said Joseph was the first owner of the LOWDER farm and settled there about 1825. He cleared the land and built one of the first log cabins in the area.]

Miss LOWDER's parents, Joseph and Ruth Sare LOWDER, came to Pike County, Illinois, from Monroe County, Indiana, in 1831. Mr. LOWDER's grandfather (John) came to America when William Penn was founding the city of Philadelphia. ROLLIE GARNER
"Rollie Garner is a native of this county, born on April 23, 1870, in Brown township, the son of Harrison B. and Frances (Lowder) Garner. Harrison Garner was born in Kentucky, in 1828, the son of Solomon and Deborah Garner, who came to this county in 1832 and settled on the farm near where the subject was born. They entered this land from the government, cleared it and established a happy home, where they lived the balance of their lives. Frances Lowder, mother of the subject, was a native of North Carolina, born in 1832, the daughter of Solomon and Sarah Lowder. In 1836 the Lowder family came to this county and settled southwest of Brownsburg. A few years later, her father started back to North Carolina on horse back, to settle an estate in which he was interested, and was never heard from again. The mystery of his disappearance has been unexplained through all these years."
