Notes
3.
Caleb LOWDER
The following children of Caleb and Ann LOWDER are listed in the Lick Creek Monthly Minutes, Orange Co, IN: Matthew (born 3-7-1784), Tabitha, Ralph, Joseph, Charles, Achsah, Catherine (born 11-6-1798).
Caleb LOWDER's will, written 7 Aug 1848, also mentions deceased son Nathan H.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that Caleb (Jr), Rachel, and Edith LOWDER were also children of Caleb and Ann.

John LOWDER
John LOWDER was apparently married by 1789 when his son Joel was born. However, nothing is known about the identity of this wife. It is presumed that this John is the same John LOWDER who married Mary Osborn in Randolph County, NC, 22 Sep 1803, but there is no PROOF of this. The administration of John LOWDER's estate in 1839 identified his widow's name as Sarah. Nothing futher is known about her.
Thus, it appears that John was married at least three times. Which wives were the mothers of which children are a matter of guesswork, but it appears that Joel, Elizabeth, Solomon, and Nathan were probably children of the first wife [unknown], while Nancy, John, William, and Sarah were probably children of Mary Osborn.

Joseph LOWDER
Joseph LOWDER's birthplace was South Carolina according to his son Jesse's baptismal record in 1869. This suggests that John & Hannah LOWDER came from New Jersey (where Caleb was born in 1760) to North Carolina by way of South Carolina, and if so, they may have traveled to South Carolina by ship.
The only known child of Joseph LOWDER is Jesse. The 1800 Census date indicates that Joseph had another son and two daughters by this time. The other son is thought to be James LOWDER who married in Patrick County, VA, a year later (1816) than Jesse did (1815).

Samuel LOWDER
If Orange County, NC, is accurate as the birthplace of Samuel LOWDER, this indicates that John and Hannah LOWDER were in North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War. The name of Samuel LOWDER's first wife is unknown. There is no PROOF that Eber LOWDER (born about 1831) was a child of Samuel and Elizabeth LOWDER. The names of Samuel's other children appear in the Quaker records.

HISTORY OF SANGAMON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, Chicago: Inter-State Publishing Company, 1881:
TALKINGTON TOWNSHIP
pp. 1033-1034:
"George Washington Lowder, son of William and Margaret (Harris) Lowder, was born in 1805, in Harlan county, Kentucky. When an infant, his father moved into Lee county, Virginia, and settled in Powell's Valley. Here, when, he was about ten years old, Mr. Lowder's mother died, upon which event, his father, for the time being, broke up housekeeping, and the subject of this biography found a temporary home with his aunt, Henrietta Kelley, at which place he had a kind of general home till of age, spending the time of his minority in working as a laborer, and in the winter seasons going to such schools as were then afforded....
William, Mr. Lowder's father, raised the following children: Matthew, Nathan, George W., James, William, and Sarah. Matthew resides in Texas, James in Kentucky, and George W. in Illinois. The others are dead."

Job LOWDER
In the 1850 Henry County, Indiana, Census, Job's widow Sarah was living with Phineas LOWDER (presumably her son). A 13-year-old William LOWDER was also in the household, but it is not known whose child he was. Sarah would have been too old to have been his mother in 1837.

Joshua LOWDER
There is no PROOF as to who any of the children of Joshua LOWDER and Jane PHILLIPS are. However, circumstantial evidence strongly supports the accuracy of these listings, with the possible exception of the youngest child listed here (Nancy Jane).
In addition to the children listed here, there were probably others. The 1810 Census of Washington County, Virginia, enumerates two females age 0-10, and the 1820 Census of Bath County, Kentucky, enumerates one female age 10-16 and one female age 0-10. It is not known who these girls were.
The 1810 Census also lists two males age 0-10, and the 1820 Census lists two males age 10-16. It is thought that these two are Samuel and John. The 1820 Census also lists four males age 0-10. It is thought that these boys are probably Elijah, Joseph, William, and James.
In census records, Virginia is identified as the birthplace of Samuel, John, and Elijah, while Kentucky is identified as the birthplace of Joseph, William, and James. Since Elijah's age indicates a birth year of about 1811, while Joseph's age indicates a birth year of about 1815, it appears that Joshua LOWDER and family moved from Virginia to Kentucky between 1811 and 1815. The first tax list of Bath County, Kentucky, on which Joshua LOWDER appears is the 1817 tax list.
The 1830 Census of Hendricks County, Indiana, lists two males age 5-10 in Joshua LOWDER's household. It is not known who these boys are. The 1830 Census also enumerates three females age 0-5 and one female age 5-10. It is thought that three of these four girls are Lucinda, Mary Jane, and Nancy Jane. It is not known who the other girl is.
The last Bath County, Kentucky, tax list on which Joshua LOWDER appears is the 1824 list. The earliest record of Joshua LOWDER in Hendricks County, Indiana, is an 1828 voter list (and Samuel LOWDER married in Hendricks County in 1827). The birthplace of Lucinda and Mary Jane LOWDER is consistently identified as Indiana, and their ages are consistent with Joshua LOWDER having been in Indiana by 1825.
However, the birthplace of Nancy Jane LOWDER is consistently identified in census records as Kentucky, and her age indicates a birth year of about 1828. This fact makes it questionable as to whether she was a child of Joshua LOWDER.
On the other hand, evidence to support the supposition that Nancy Jane was Joshua's daughter comes from the 1838 Morgan County, Indiana, indentures of both Lucinda LOWDER and Nancy Jane LOWDER. This evidence also supports the idea that Joshua LOWDER died sometime prior to 1838. The last record found for him in Hendricks County is an 1832 voter list.

Nathan LOWDER
Much of the information on this family is based upon circumstantial evidence, rather than concrete proof. It is not known for certain that the Nathan LOWDER who married Nancy Smith in Clay County, Kentucky, in 1807 is the same Nathan who had married Elizabeth Rowe in Washington County, Virginia, in 1801, and who presumably was the son of John and Hannah LOWDER.
It is also not known if there were any children from either of these two marriages. No census record prior to 1830 has been found for Nathan LOWDER. The 1830 Wayne County, Missouri, Census suggests that David LOWDER and Nathan LOWDER Jr (both taxed in Poinsett County, Arkansas, in 1839) were both born between 1815 and 1820 (as they are presumably the two 10-15 year-old boys in Nathan LOWDER's household). Since it is not known just when Nathan LOWDER married Sophia Stiltner, it is possible that David was a child from Nathan LOWDER's marriage to Nancy Smith.
There is no proof, in fact, that David LOWDER or John LOWDER (presumably born 1820-1825) were Nathan's sons, although the circumstantial evidence points strongly to this. According to Ernestine Loudder Bowden (now deceased), a descendant of John Green LOUDDER, John Green's father was named John and this older John had a brother named David.
The journal of Sophia Stiltner's brother, Frederick Charles Stiltner Jr., states that the last that was heard from Nathan and Sophia LOWDER was that they were "on the banks of the Wabash." No date is given for this journal entry, but it does place Nathan and Sophia somewhere in Indiana (or perhaps Illinois).
The 1820 Census of Owen County, Indiana, lists a Nathan Cowder household (page 143) with 4 males age 0-10, 3 males age 26-45, 2 females age 0-10, 4 females age 16-26, 1 female age 26-45, and 1 female over age 45. It is possible that this was Nathan LOWDER, and the census-taker may have mis-read the first initial of his last name.
Nathan LOWDER apparently died between 1840 (when he was listed in the 1840 Census of Poinsett County, Arkansas) and 1850 (when no husband was enumerated with Sophia in the 1850 St. Francis County, Arkansas, Census).
