12. Barnet LOOMIS

LOOMIS FAMILY HISTORY

Written by Martha Adeline Mendenhall Loomis, wife of Charles Henry Loomis (1839-1915) for her son William Thomas Loomis.

1.
Your grandfather Barnet Loomis was born in 1803
In his parents home near the Hudson river grand and free
In this home he spent the days of his childhood
His youth till he left home to learn the harness trade in early manhood.

2.
He was married in 1830 to the lady of his choice
In the town of Fort Edward near lake George
He engaged for some years in Hotel keeping
Till he tired of public life its harvest reaping.

3.
In 1837 with wife and little daughter he came west
To Illinois the "Garden State" the fairest and best
In Canton, Illinois he worked in the harness making line
Where your father Charles H. Loomis was born 1839.

4.
A few years later he removed to the town of Farmington
Where he engaged in the harness business where success and wealth he won
Built a fine large brick house in the suburbs of the town
Planted shade and fruit trees much small fruit too was grown.

5.
The lawn was a bower of beauty roses round its porches grew
The dooryard decked with flowers of every shade and hue
He was content but Charles now to a young man grown
Persuaded his father to buy sixty acres farm land joining town.

6.
Harriett his older sister a beautiful young girl
Around her white brow rich dark hair loved to wave and curl
Dark blue eyes her intelligence and refinement lent an added grace
Of all I ever knew she was the fairest of her race.

7.
Harriett was married unfortunately all could see
Her husband not her equal in mental ability
In later years most dear to her children three
Charles and Randolph bright boys and baby "Fannie"
(Harriett died age 33).

8.
A home was not denied to the motherless little brood
Grandma Loomis took them done all and the best she could
But none can fill a mothers place how often we can see
To train her children up to lives of peace and purity.

9.
At the old home with their sisters children Nellie and Willie tried
In making good cheer else lonely where their infant brothers died
Charles too was the soul of cordial hospitality
All were educated in the best schools without jealous rivalry.

10.
In the meantime from their eastern home your great grandparents came
Thomas and Hannah from the Bible taken was their given names
They lived with their son Norton in his home near Farmington
In their old age in quiet and comfort with their favorite son.

11.
All of their other children came at length and settled near
Their brothers Barnet and Norton and families all so dear
Frederick and John Sarah, Katie and Eliza their married sisters three
John settled in Aurora near each other were all the family,

12.
Fred was the youngest son and brother he had lost his wife
So dear to him and in his heart grief and lonliness held strife
But he had not long to grieve his spirited horses took fright and ran
Throwing him from his loaded wagon and instantly ki1led the man.

13.
In a few years John too died from failure of the heart
Left his wife and children sad and grieved from him to part
Thomas Norton and Harriett were his children three
But Harriett like her father died from heart disease the same as he.

14.
Later Thomas and his mother came to live in Farmington
Norman removed to Kansas with his wife and little sons
Thomas never married after a few years he and his mother died
In Oakwood cemetery near Farmington they're sleeping side by side.

15.
Uncle Norton Loomis's home was a fine country place
A large house much fruit fine stock all showed wealth and taste
His father a fine old gentleman died after many years
His mother reached the age of 86 died beloved and wept by many tears.

16.
His wife a notable housekeeper and his daughters three
Orena, Mary, and Jane better girls you may not hope to see
His only son named Dexter a bright boy I have been told
.ied to his parents great grief when only eight years old.

17.
Next I will mention Aunt Katie who lived in the same neighborhood
Whose husband Uncle Neal Brown was a substantial farmer good
Their family was two sons Daniel and John who died at twenty one
Jane Melissa at the age of twenty her earthly race was run.

18.
Their home was a fine one and a good comodius farm house
Standing on a rise of ground sloping gently to the south
Surrounded by fine shade and fruit trees from the house a pleasant view
On another rise of ground a large barn all buildings staunch and new.

19.
Jane married her cousin Eli Loomis Uncle Neal sold his farm to Dan
Hoping to make life easier a very mistaken plan
Daniel sold the farm to cousin Chester Butler who is still the owner
Who could if he wished to great charities be a liberal doner.

20.
Daniels marriage was a great mistake as everyone would say
His wife so extravagant in her hands the farm money slipped away
Their eldest son Hallie a beautiful boy died in his early youth
Then she left Daniel taking with her an only younger son devoid of
love and truth.

21.
Aunt Sarah Piester lived in Henry Co. Illinois
Her husband Thomas Piester four girls and their son George
Was all her family they had a pleasant quiet country home
And afterwards removed to a resident purchased in Cambridge a small town.

22.
There they made their home till the parents were called away
And all their children now have finished life's fleeting clay
Their daughter Eliza Morrison's children live in Stuart Iowa
So happily situated with their homes and families they seem inclined to stay.

23.
And last but not least Aunt Eliza Butler had a home
For many years in Farmington from which they did not roam
Her husband three sons Chester Neal and Fred
Was her family only a younger daughter Mary was numbered with the dead.

24.
But now the aged parents have laid their burdens down
We hope that they have gained an everlasting crown
But their sons still live where their parents lived and died
In Farmington they are wealthy men in business occupied.

25.
They have honors gained Chester is the mayor of the town
Chester's wife was my girlhood chum one son Bert and Mallie still at home
Two sons died. Neal and family live on their farm very near Farmington
Fred now owns the beautiful place once father Loomis's home.

26.
Uncle Norton's girls since the day their parents died
And left them a large inheritance have been well supplied
With this worlds goods Orena has a fine residence in town
Her husband name was Curtis Brown her son is Charlie Brown.

27.
Charlie Brown is unmarried and lives with his mother dear
Her husband sleeps in Oakwood the Farmington cemetery near
Mary Greenwell is a widow lives with her family in Farmington not far from her married children's home
Jane and her husband live on Uncle Norton's place where Jane now owns.

28.
Janes husband James Denny bought out Orena's share
He is wealthy but intemperate not a relative would care
To own him poor Jane is an invalid though of much wealth possessed
Broken down with the care of her large family and no rest.

29.
When we were first married we always loved to go
To visit Uncle Norton we loved them and I know
We gained their love and esteem Orena was so dear
She visited us in 1912 since we came here to live.

30.
In our first married years we lost two dear baby boys
Grief like a piercing dagger keen banished our hopes and joys
But faith taught us to look beyond to their fair heavenly home
Where we all shall meet when life is o'er nevermore to mourn.

31.
Then Orena came to visit us stayed with us many days
When Louie died cheering our hearts with her kind loving ways
When we removed to the farm we bought our Pleasant Valley home
Little Charlie died but kind friends came to sympathize and with us mourn.

32.
About this time Father Loomis sold his home at Farmington, Illinois
And bought a farm a few miles from us to be near his boys
To help him we sold our farm and bought another at Munson
For Father Loomis sacrificed much to be near his favorite son.

33.
The house he built was fine and large but never could excel
The home he left in Farmington his family loved so well
He lived in a pleasant home joining our farm and it was there
Your sisters May and Minnie were born adding joy to all our care.

34.
All of Uncle Norton's family came to visit us in our new home
We lived near Aunt Sarah twas pleasant to live near relatives of our own
But westward the star of empire ever takes its way
Not many years ere we followed the star to a home in Iowa.

35.
Grandpa Loomis and family visited us in our new western home
My mother too and sister dear and brothers to add to our pleasure came
It was here in the centenial year our youngest son was born
We named him for his uncle William T. he was the joy and light of night and morn.

36.
After a few years we rented our farm and in 1878
At the urgent wish of Grandpa Loomis years with their growing weight
Pressed heavy on him and we worked with might and main
To improve his farm that many lasting advantages he might gain.

37.
William his younger son was married while we were there
They lived in Geneseo a year and were ready to assume the care
Of Grandpa's farm so we could return bid to all a kind goodby
To William his wife and baby named for his Uncle Charles Henry was the boy.

38.
I should have noted long ere this Nellie had married a rich farmers son
Who had seen service in the Civil War ere he was twenty one
His father had given him a farm in Fulton Co. near his own
And built him a fine house which became John and Nellie's home.

39.
Nellie's husband John Whitaker was fine looking generous and kind
A good farmer all his neighbors said as ever you will find
There in this happy home their two little girls were born
Ada Dell and Orena May fair as the rising morn.

40.
But soon dark clouds arose to darken all their skies
John fell victim to disease in dire consumptions guise
He journeyed west to Colorado in hopes his health to regain
In one year he came home to die labor to save his life was all in vain.

41.
He died his body now is sleeping neath the sod
We hope his spirit has found rest in the bosom of his God
Nellie with her children came to live in her parents home
For John had left abundant means to keep them in years to come.

42.
Fannie Cavens still lived at her grandparents home
Randolph too attending school some winters then was gone
But the sisters May and Minnie and Willie when six years old
And the cousins May and Ada attended school together in fair weather or in cold.

43.
Your sister May at this time had a beautiful voice
Learned to play the organ her father bought and sang songs of her choice
Minnie too as a singer done remarkably well
And as a musician many others would excel.

44.
You know your sister May was married when quite young
To Frank McCartney a near neighbors handsome son
With us they went to Iowa when all of us returned
All they had of this worlds goods by industry they earned.

45.
In their little home in the valley Della and Frank were born
But Harry was born at Jefferson Center when they moved there a ranch to run
There they lived and Della went to school and must praise from teachers earned
By her application to study and her lessons well learned

46.
Minnie too was married to Charlie Pierce a neighbors son
An industrious young farmer who persevered until he won
By the help of a faithful wife a measure of success
As Christian people trusting God their labor He will bless.

47.
Only one child a daughter Addie came their home to bless
Her parents carefully trained her with love and tenderness
Until the day she married Rhea Ream and now leads a useful life
As a mother of two girls Lois and Frances a boy named Robert and as a faithful wife.

48.
Nellies girls like their cousins May and Minnie married farm boys
The Smith brothers Win and Harry their lives checkered with mingled griefs and joys
Win and Ada had the misfortune to lose their eldest son Glen
The younger son Rolland is at Ames College where military tactics he will gain.

49.
Now we return to Grandfather Loomis aged 81 when he died
His wife and children through his illness ever at his side
Caring for him, in 1884 his frail body was at rest
We hope to meet him when this life is oer in the mansions of the blest.

50.
Grandmother lived some years a widow her life was full of kindly deeds and love
Doing all in her power to help her loved ones her reward is up above
She lived till the dawn of a new century and died on her 88th birthday
With her children and loved ones near her she peacefully passed away.

51.
Fannie Cavens married Prof. Guiliams and they went to a southern state
Both were teachers in a college more than this I cannot now relate
Charles and Randolph both went west toward the golden gate
All the children had a portion of their mothers share of grandfathers estate.

52.
Mays children too are married Della has a beautiful home
Her husband Mr. Johndrow his daughter Opal Della loves as her own
Frank married Leila Ellicott they lost one child so dear
But their little daughter Flossie May lives their hearts to cheer.

53.
Harry married Ethel Stockham a dainty little miss
She is his dearly beloved therefor his life has much bliss
They have a home in Griswold and Harry's chief employ
Is to finish and furnish their home for both of them to enjoy.

54.
I will write of one more wedding that of our youngest son
Who married neighbor Daniels daughter Grace whose heart and hand he won
They have a home in Iowa, Williams own loved native state
And of their family of dear children I will now try to relate.

55.
Their eldest son ever studious is now in a Military school
Adding knowledge and training to that he gained as he obeyed each rule
We love to hear from Dennis and Barnet too who is helpful wise and good
Loren and Norton both fine boys and little Grace so fine and fair and ever in a happy mood.

56.
Then the youngest son little Darwin he is bright and full of cheer
Beloved to all to his parents hears and brothers and sisters dear
We love to have all of you visit us though we cannot often meet
May we at last all walk together on Heaven's golden street.

57.
Many years have passed by since we left our Iowa home so dear
And journeyed southward with all our family near
To settle in Southern Missouri land of your fathers choice
Contented he seemed though often wished he had stayed in Illinois.

58.
Life is fleeting wealth often takes wings and flies away
It is better to gain true riches that with us will ever stay
"What shall it profit if we gain the world and at last lose our souls
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul" let us yield to Heaven's control.

59.
Father has gone he was called to cross over the dark river
But his Savior was with him to comfort and his soul to deliver
We hope to meet him and all our loved ones who have gone on before
Where united in Heaven we shall meet to part never more.

60.
Frank and May now live with me both are kind and good
May is so much like her father his work she understood
Minnie often comes to see me and Della too and I know you and Grace would come
Should any of us be very sick and need you in our home.

61.
Nellie has gone to California to stay a while and visit her daughter May
Till Win and Ada shall send for her to come to Menlo Iowa
She ought be happy in Fresno the land of fruits and flowers
With May and her family no doubt she spends many happy hours.

62.
Your Uncle William T. lives near Columbus Junction state of Iowa
His wife and son Charles with him Charlie may ever stay
With his parents for he is unmarried perhaps may never be
No doubt they would like to keep him if he stays willingly and free.

63.
I have done my best to note all the branches upon our family tree
I hope it will entertain you as you often think of me
For it has taken some time please excuse any mistakes I have enjoyed it well
To look back o'er the past and remember old friends and events of their lives to tell.

"This would have been written after 1917-1918 because verse #48 mentions Rolland Smith at Ames College.  Rolland was sent there in World War I to study military tactics.  Rolland was my father and the above information was supplied by my mother, Donna Ferrin Smith.  Signed: Phyllis Smith Jensen, 10419 Cleary Lane, Mitchellville MD 20716, 18 February 1983"

Obituary, 1907:
"The funeral over the remains of Mrs. Able BUTLER was held Sunday at her home where she has lived for sixty-one-years.  A large company of friends and neighbors assembled at the home at 2 o'clock to pay their last respects to a worthy pioneer citizen.  The services were conducted by deceased's former pastor, the Rev. J.B. Dille, of Elmwood, and who penned the following obituary notice.  Rev. Thos. Stephenson made a prayer.
Eliza Maria LOOMIS was born in Argyle, New York, July 6, 1815.  She was the youngest daughter of Thos. and Hannah Mary Loomis.  Here she grew to womanhood and January 10, 1837, was united in marriage with Mr. Able BUTLER.  In 1845 Mr. and Mrs. BUTLER, with their two children--Mary and Chester--moved by team to Farmington, Ill.  Arriving here in September of the same year Mr. BUTLER purchased a small building that stood on the site of the home where she died, the original house being a part of the present home.  Here Cornelius and Frederick were born.  Here her only daughter Mary died at the age of sixteen years.  Here her husband died some six years ago.  For 90 years she lived; raised her three sons to manhood.  In this place she toiled, prayer, read her bible, a precious book to her.  Here came those joys of childish prattle; the sorrows that death brings to wife and mother.  But her faith in God and hope of immortality she complained not at her burdens but faithfully performed her duty to husband, children and home.  Her three sons, Chester, Cornelius, and Frederick, were all present at the funeral to look for the last time on the face of their mother.
Mrs. BUTLER was for many years a Christian and was a charter member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Farmington, Ill.  In her younger years was active in Christian work but her loyalty to the church and her love to God never waned as the increasing years and infirmity of age prevented her from going to the house of worship.
She was a good wife, a devoted mother and earnest Christian.  At the advanced age of 91 years, 9 months and 20 days the summons came and she yielded up her spirit to God who gave it, April 26, 1907.
Her remains sleep beside her husband at Pleasant Hill cemetery.
To be absent from the body, to be present with the Lord."

PORTRAIT & BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF FULTON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, Chicago: Biographical Publishing Co, 1890--LDS Film #934,984, Item 2, p. 727:
"Cornelius B. BUTLER, a brief sketch of whose life now claims attention from the reader, is a son of Abel BUTLER, one of Farmington's earliest and best known pioneers, who came to this place as early as 1842, while yet the surrounding country was in reality "a forest primeval."  His coming was prior to the time of any railroads; in fact, everything was in a thoroughly uncultivated state, but he followed teaming as an occupation and succeeded admirably from a financial point of view.  He was born and reared in New York and married Miss Eliza Loomis from the same State, and brought his wife and two children West with him even at that early day.  After the steam horse ran through this section of the country he commenced to farm, and became the owner of one hundred and seventy acres of valuable land.  At the age of seventy-eight he is still living at Farmington, and his wife is in her seventy-fifth year.  To them were born four children, viz: Mary, who died when fifteen years old; Charles C., Cornelius Brown, and Frederick A., all of whom reside in Farmington."
