Biography of Frederick Raymond LOWDER, written by daughter Laurel (Laurie) Beth Schunk, 1985:
"Frederick Raymond Lowder was born 26 July 1899, in Peoria (Peoria County), Illinois.  He was the fourth of seven children, born on July 26th, his mother's twenty-sixth birthday.  His siblings were Clyde, born November 1891; Hazel C., born August 1893; and Ruth P., born February 1896.  They were followed by Gladys, Kate, born around 1904, and Frank Willis, born around 1909.

He was very short, and according to those who knew him well when young, very feisty (one of his words) as a result.  He was a good student, top of his class at White School in Peoria.  He left high school before graduation, to see the world.  He joined the Illinois National Guard at 16, mustered into service in Illinois and sent to Mexico on maneuvers.  At 17 he joined the regular Army the day after President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany--April 7, 1917(war declared the 6th).

He was sent to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, then on to Fort Hood, Texas, then on to France after a short training session.  He was in active service very soon.  (By then, he wished he'd listened to his father's advice.  The war was not romantic or fun anymore.  His mother had gone to the Post Office daily, trying to get him out.  Capt. _____, his superior, kept telling her he would get him out.  All he did was to ask Ray if he wanted out.  "No." They [recruiting officers] had taken 20 pounds off another man's records and added them to Ray's weight, because he was 20 pounds underweight.  Clyde, his brother, said he'd joined because he thought he'd work with horses all through the war. But he was in.  He'd just made up his mind to do his best with the war effort and then go home.  [This all from Mother])

He was awarded the Silver Star plus an oak leaf cluster (equivalent to a second Silver Star).  One citation:  "For your gallantry and splendid performance of duty at Romagne [?], November 1, 1918---signed by Major General George Bell, Jr., commanding 33rd Division."  The second:  "Corporal Frederick Lowder, Battery C, 124th Field Artillery for Distinguished and
Exceptional Gallantry at Argonne Forest on 12th September, 1918 in the Operations of the American Expeditionary Forces----as an expression of appreciation of His Valor, I award him this Citation.  27th of March, 1919.  (Signed) John J. Pershing, Commander in Chief.  Appointed: Sergeant Headquarters Co., 124th Field Artillery, United States Army, Twenty-second day of November, 1918, at Bershbach, Luxembourg, 6th day of March, 1919, (signed) A.L. Keesling, Colonel, 124th Field Artillery USA.  (All commissioned offers and non-commissioned officers demoted in rank [with lower pay] upon end of war and/or return to US)

Private Frederick R. Lowder, R-1378987 promoted to Corporal, Infantry School Detachment in the Regular Army of the USA, from 16th of December, 1922.  At Fort Benning, Georgia, 19th day of December, 1922, (signed) W.B. McCaskey, Lt. Colonel, Infantry.

Corporal Frederick Lowder, R 1378987 appointed to Sergeant, Infantry School Detachment of the United States Army...from 10th day of January, 1923.  At Fort Benning, Georgia, this 11th day of January, 1923.  W.B. McCaskey, Lt. Colonel, Infantry.

Honorable Discharge from the United States Army,...that Frederick R. Lowder, R-1398987, Sergeant, Infantry School Detachment of the United States Army...is hereby Honorably Discharged...by reason of Expiration Term of Service.  Said Frederick R. Lowder was born in Peoria, Illinois.  When enlisted he was 21 1/2 years of age and by occupation a salesman (etc.)  At Fort Benning, Georgia, 6 this 8th day of November, 1923.

Family history has it that Ray picked to be sent to Fort Benning for training, when he had a choice of any other better post to be sent to.  Because he believed marriages are made in Heaven, he later knew why he picked Fort Benning, for that is where he met his future wife.

Sometime in all those years, before he married Lucile Marrie Holleman in Columbus (Muscogee), Georgia, 22 April 1924, he tried his hand at boxing (probably bantam-weight) and at being a cowboy in Wyoming.  A descendant of Lowders who moved nearly every generation, he didn't much like staying in one place for long.

At Fort Benning Lucile was a secretary for an officer there.  She saw a young corporal with a blond "pompadour" hairstyle jumping mud puddles and fell in love.  One of Ray's adventures there was to be asked if he would drive the General's jeep.  "Oh, sure," came the reply.  He spent many long minutes at the wheel of the jeep, trying to figure it out.  He didn't know how to drive but didn't want to admit it.  He did figure it out; he did take the jeep wherever it was supposed to go.

Ray and Mother married in June.  She carried orange blossoms; her wedding band, destined to be worn smooth by years of work, had orange blossoms carved on it.

Ray was selling tires, among other things.  They traveled a lot because of his itchy feet.  Their first child, Gladys Marrie, was born in 1925 in Fort Myers, FL.  Twenty months later, Barbara Jeanne was born in Columbus (Muscogee), GA.  Both Ray and Mother were baby people, so these children were very welcome.

Ray and his mother-in-law, Willie Powell Sturges Holleman, were best buddies.  Ray loved everyone he met and never knew a stranger.  He loved to laugh and play harmless practical jokes.  He and Willie were probably great company to each other.  They were both great talkers and storytellers.  They also were the type to want to get along with others.  Willie was later to live with Ray and Mother for a short while, as did her brother Alonza and her son, Carlton, Mother's brother.

More traveling.  Mother often said she cleaned all the apartments in Chicago when they lived there.  Times were hard, and work was hard to find.  Because of his disposition, Ray was a good salesman, but construction and the company of his family in Peoria called him back there.

Because Mother wanted to live in a 2-story house, when Constance Ann was an infant, they bought some property on Harvard Hill overlooking Peoria and the Illinois River and the hills beyond, and the first thing Ray did was build a 2-story house, one room on top of the other, beginning in 1934.  Building the house was to become the thing that consumed their future, for it wasn't done until after Frederick Raymond, Jr., and Laurel Beth were born (1937 and 1943).  It was probably finished in about 1949 or 1950, most of the work being done by Ray himself.  During the construction, two family stories took place.  One, one May Day, Connie climbed up on the back of the couch to hang a May basket.  Behind the couch was a hole for the cold-air return; over the hole was a rug.  Connie fell behind the couch, disappearing through the hole in the floor and ending up in the basement.  Much later, one day Connie pointed out the hole to little Raymond.  "See, Raymond, you can see Daddy working down there."

Little Raymond, mimicing words he'd heard his father use, said, "Well, damned if you can't."  He may have gotten his mouth soaped for that.

For sixteen years of their lives in Peoria Ray worked at the Post Office as a mail carrier. One of his routes included Kingman School, where all five children attended at one time or another.  As a result, he became good friends with Robert Burt, principal of Kingman.  Mr. Burt took a proprietary interest in Ray's children as a result; Laurie remembers being teased in class by Mr. Burt.  The day he entered her classroom to announce the birth
of one of her nephews, born 1951, he said, "Lowder-not softer--you're an aunt."

At about the time he finished building their home, Ray started a construction business with a friend.  They traveled quite a bit, in Illinois and Iowa, on different jobs.  Ray was a lather, working mainly on schools or churches.  He worked on the Pabst Building in Peoria Heights, the light of which could be seen from the house, so his children could "see"where Daddy was working.  There, he discovered a litter of puppies and brought one home to Laurie, who wanted a fair shareof King, Raymond, Jr.'s dog.  (Ray and his friends had found that litter in a culvert in the cemetary and had run home to get Daddy to come help them get the pups out.  Daddy smoked them out, and King, a beautiful red dog, supposedly part wolf, never forgave him.  Although King was tame as could be with the children, he never trusted adults.  The only times he'd approach Daddy was under the table, to take a piece of proffered steak, with Mother crying, "For Heaven's sake, Ray, don't feed that dog steak!"  King later added to his stature, in the children's eyes, by threatening to bite the next door neighbor bent on whipping her child.)

When Daddy heard Laurie offering Ray 34 cents or thereabouts for just King's tail, so she could own at least part of a dog, he determined to bring her a tiny pup.  It was a small terrier, white with black and brown spots, that they named Foxy.  Daddy seemed to value feistiness in man or beast, because one of his favorite stories involved feisty Foxy and Mrs. Swain, a neighbor across the back alley who was a termagant.  Her voice could nearly shatter glass.  One day she was crossing the family's lot, down the alley from the house, carrying a branch of a blackberry bush for some reason.  Supposedly, when she came upon Laurie and Foxy on the lot, Foxy bit her.  Laurie was there and didn't see any such thing.  Maybe, people thought, Foxy thought Mrs. Swain was going to hit Laurie. Anyway, Mrs. Swain sued Daddy and took him to court.

Now Foxy was feisty, especially where his family was concerned.  He was very protective of Laurie especially.  So it is possible he bit Mrs. Swain, but no one thinks so.  That day in court, she harangued the judge about the vicious dog and so on.  Daddy, ever a showman, was prepared.  He, for his defense, had Laurie, about 4 years old, bring the dog into the courtroom.  Laurie was all dolled up in a light sundress, with long blond beribboned ringlets.  She had the vicious dog tied up, at the end of a cheese string (a very thin string).  When the little girl and the tiny dog entered the courtroom, poor Mrs. Swain was laughed out of court, especially since the hole in her sock, Exhibit A, supposedly made by the dog bite, had obviously been made and spread by human fingers.

Mealtimes, besides being a time to sneak King food under the table, were great fun.  Other families may say one shouldn't discuss religion and politics; that's mainly what we did discuss (or rather, that's what the two younger children heard discussed.)  A Truman Democrat, Ray said Truman, maligned in the 40's, would go down in history as one of our greatest presidents, which has come true.  True tolerance for other races was taught at that table.

Before-mealtimes was fun too, especially when Mother was frying French fries, and Daddy stole them, hot, from the newspapers on the stove where they were draining, much to Mother's consternation, with reason--they took a lot of work to make.

Ray loved his kids.  He loved, when they were small, not even toddlers, to hold them standing upright on his hand.  His love of life and of people influenced them all for life.  For all the years of their lives after his death, they missed him.

He died May 5, 1952, after a very brief illness.  He'd had some problems with balance earlier, but the doctors could find nothing obvious.  He'd gone to bed sick Sunday, and couldn't get out of bed the next morning.  He asked for orange juice, which he couldn't keep down.  Frightened, Mother called an ambulance, which took him to St. Francis Hospital where he died at 3:25 PM, never recovering from the coma he'd fallen into that morning.  The autopsy revealed a benign tumor of the right side of the brain.  Because he was right-handed, the tumor didn't effect him much until the very end.

A lady at the hospital, whose husband had been in a coma with a brain tumor for something like seven years, told Mother to be thankful he'd died so quickly.  That only angered Mother, although it was meant to comfort.  None of the family could at that point find anything to be thankful for, for Daddy was gone."
