John Day QUARLES

"Abram David Quarles was born in 1854 in Russell County, near the present town of Pittsview, Alabama. He was the son of John Day Quarles, born 1826 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. His grandfather, William Washington Quarles, born 1803, was a native of Edgefield District, South Carolina. William Quarles, with his family, came to Russell County in the early 1830's. He was married to Sarah Ann Day (1806-1887), daughter of John Day, who donated the land on which Cool Springs Baptist Church was built. John Day (1778-1854) and his daughter, Sarah Day Quarles Averett Gordon are buried in the cemtery near this church. William Quarles was fatally injured in 1835 while bear hunting in Bullock County, Alabama."

Mr. G.M. STURGES, aged 57 on May 15th last, died at his residence, No. 502 Fifth avenue, Girard, at 2:40 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of five months of dysentery and other complications. He is survived by five children, Mrs. C.C. Boyd [Byrd] of Columbus; Mrs. R.Q. HOLLEMAN of Girard; Mr. George STURGESS of Birmingham, Alabama; and Masters Lonie and Selma STURGES of Girard. He is also survived by one brother Mr. Elie STURGES of Texas and two sisters Mrs. Dunn of Texas and Mrs. Calhoun of Anniston, Alabama. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church and was an old Confederate veteran, having entered the service at the age of 16 years. Interment was at Girard cemetery.

William Allen COLEMAN came to Phenix City, Russell Co. AL from Ft. Gaines, GA. about one year before his death. Was engaged in farming. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was a well-known and highly esteemed gentleman. Survived by two sons and five daughters. Died at home, 584 Ingersoll St., Phenix City, AL Died of pneumonia after a lingering illness of about one year. He was 52 years old. Lists T.W. Coleman and B.E. Coleman as his brothers, one sister, Mrs. E.M Pope.

Florence was sick about three weeks before death. Left her husband and seven children. A member of the Methodist Church. Described as meek, mild, kind and gentle as Moses; had the faith which was kindred to Elijah's; patient in afflictions and was filled with that love which thinketh no evil. Mary-like, always found time for prayer and service to her Lord.
Buried in New Hope Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Jackson conducting funeral.

One of 10 children born to Robert Benjamin Gullatt (1843-1890), a farmer and Confederate soldier, and Cynthia M. COLEMAN. He married Margaret Mae Rutledge and had three children:
