Descendants of Johannes KINSINGER (ca 1735-1788)

Notes

11. Johannes KINSINGER

Johannes KINSINGER was deceased by the time of his son Johannes' marriage, 18 October 1836.  Hermann Guth in AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY says that Johannes died on the Stausteinerhof farm near Pirmasens and was survived by his widow and four children.  However, Guth's book also re-prints a letter written 28 August 1839 which refers to Frau KINSINGER of the Stausteinerhof and her ten children.

Five of these children can be proved: Johannes (French equivalent, Jean); Jacob (French equivalent, Jacques); Catherine (Katie); Veronica (Fannie); and Jacobina (Phoebe).  Circumstantial evidence suggests that the other five were Elizabeth, Barbara, Christina, Peter, and Samuel.  There also was a proved son, Christian, who died in infancy, and a proved daughter, Magdalena (French equivalent, Madeleine), who may have been dead by 1836.

Two of the daughters, Phoebe and Katie, married KINSINGER cousins, according to W.H. Grubb in his book HISTORY OF THE MENNONITES OF BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO.  He states that their husbands, John KINSINGER and Rev. Joseph KINSINGER, were sons of John, a distant relative of Phoebe & Katie's grandfather Johannes KINSINGER.
Indeed, this John (born 1801) was a son of their grandfather Johannes' brother Peter (born 1774), which means that Jacobina and Catherine married their second cousins.

While Johannes KINSINGER died in Germany, his brothers Jacob, Christian, Peter, Samuel, and Joseph all came to Butler County, Ohio.  His widow Christina also came to America, sometime prior to 1860 when she was enumerated in the census of Butler County, Ohio with the family of her (probable) daughter Barbara Zimmerman.  It is not known exactly when she came to America, but she was not enumerated in the 1850 census of Butler County.

She died sometime after 1870 when she was enumerated in the Butler County, Ohio, census as "living with daughter" Veronica Augspurger.  It might be noted that France (rather than Germany) was listed in the 1870 census as her birthplace, as well as for Veronica.  This may have been because the Saar territory, which changed hands between Germany and France many times, was but a few miles from their birthplaces near Contwig, Germany; and Germany was not so popular due to the Franco-Prussian War during this time.

Christina SCHRAG

According to Hermann Guth's AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY, Christina SCHRAAG or SCHRAG was born on the Heckenaschbacherhof, a farm near Contwig.  Her surname was generally Anglicized to SCHROCK in America.  In fact she is listed in Grubb's HISTORY OF THE MENNONITES OF BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO, as Christina SCHROCK, wife of John (English version of Johannes) KINSINGER.  Her sister Magdalena SCHRAG/SCHROCK was the first wife of Johannes' brother Christian KINSINGER.

47. Magdalena KINSINGER

1814, 28 September, Madelaine, born to Jean KINZINGER, age 24, of Hekenaschbacherhoff, and Christine SCHRAG

48. Elizabeth KINSINGER

Elizabeth is the most problematical of the possible children of Johannes and Christina.  On page 197 of his book AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY, Hermann Guth lists Christian Stalter's wife Elizabeth as a likely daughter of John and Christina KINSINGER.  However, on page 246, he identifies this same Elizabeth as the daughter of Johannes' uncle Peter KINSINGER of the Blumenauermuhle. Further adding to the confusion, he says on pages 199 and 256 that uncle Peter's daughter Elizabeth married Christian Wagler.

Thus, this Elizabeth may not be a daughter of Johannes and Christina at all.
No record pertaining to her birth has been found, but the gap between the birth of Magdalena (in 1814) and Barbara (ca. 1820) makes it quite feasible that she was their sister.

Christian STALTER

[However, page 246 says: Christian Stalter, son of Josef Stalter (leaseholder on Monbijou) & Susanne Hauter, born 10 Jan 1811, married Elisabeth KINZINGER, daughter of Peter KINZINGER of the Blumeneauermuhle]

55. Samuel KINSINGER

It is the author's guess that Samuel was a son because all of Johannes' brothers appear to be ruled out as Samuel's father.  No record has been found of this Samuel after the 1850 census of Butler County, Ohio, where he is listed on page 257B, with his cousin Joseph KINSINGER (son of Christian).

12. Jacob KINSINGER

Nancy KINSINGER Manschott (1878-1960) wrote that her grandfather Christian's brother Jacob KINSINGER had the following children: Magdalena (married a Zimmerman), Barbara Miller, Elizabeth Fordemwalt, Katie, Jacob, John, Joe. Missing from this list is Jacob's son Christian KINSINGER, and no other record of a daughter Katie has been found.

Todd Brown (ahrekin at hotmail dot com) reports that he found a passenger manifest for the ship DeRham which arrived in New York on 21 December 1830.  It listed Jacob, Maria, and their children.

Was miller at the Blumenauermuhle and in Hornbach. In 1937 he sold his property in Hornbach and went to the USA. Children: 411 - 413 and probably 414. In Anusb1att der Pfalz of 1844, p. 322, one can read the following notice: "Magdalena Kinzinger-Oesch of the Wahlerhof filed suit for separation of assets against her absent husband, who was at the time fiving in Venice, Ross Township, Butler County, Ohio, USA, on 6 Mar. 1844 through her lawyer, Ludwig Weis in Zweibrucken, to be heard in the county court (Bezirksgericht) in that location." It is not clear whether this action resulted in divorce or whether she later followed her husband to the USA, as 3 of their children did.
411 Peter, born on 28 Jan. 1827 at the Blumenauermuhle.  Married to Katharina Augsburger.  Second marriage in 1859 to Elizabeth Stalter.  Emigrated to the USA in 1888.  Children in Sevenmile, Ohio, according to an Oesch will from the Wahlerhof: John, Josef, Kathie, Elisabeth, Samuel, Emma, Emilie, Hannah.

As noted earlier in this book, there is some question about who this Elizabeth KINSINGER married, for Hermann Guth in AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY says on page 246 that this Elizabeth married Christian Stalter who was born 10 Jan 1811. However, Guth says elsewhere (page 197) that the latter Elizabeth was the daughter of Johannes KINSINGER and Christina SCHRAG.
