Descendants of Johannes KINSINGER (ca 1735-1788)

Notes

1. Johannes KINSINGER

Johannes KINSINGER first appeared in the Amish Mennonite community at Weisenheim am Berg in Rheinland-Pfalz (the Palatinate) in 1760. While it is estimated that Johannes was born about 1735, he could have been considerably older.

Hermann Guth in the 1995 translation of his work AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY, published by Masthof Press, Morgantown, PA 19543, gives this overview of the origins of the KINSINGER family:  "The name KINZINGER (also KINSINGER, KENTZINGER, KINSY, and KUNTZI) is of Swiss origin and is traced back to Chuentzi (diminutive of the masculine given name Kunz, Kuno, or Konrad).  The Mennonite KINZINGERs probably go back to one Peter Kuentzi, who immigrated in 1685 from Buchholterberg near Thun in Switzerland to Eppstein in the Palatinate.  In 1687 he is at the Diemersteinermuhle, married to the daughter of the previous hereditary leaseholder and now leaseholder himself.  His descendants appear as KENTSINGERs in Neukirchen-Mehlingen near Kaiserslautern, where subsequently KINSINGERs are named as members and elders of the Sembach congregation.  From here KINSINGERs early emigrated to Hesse and Waldeck (pp. 78-79)."

Records in Neukirchen reveal a Christian KINSINGER with sons Abraham and Johannes in 1724; and records in Frankenstein reveal a Johannes KINSINGER in 1743 and a Jacob KINSINGER and two Johannes KINSINGERS in 1753 and 1759.  These villages are located just to the west of Weisenheim am Berg, but there is no proof of the whereabouts of Johannes of Weisenheim am Berg prior to 1760.

A Daniel KINSINGER (1765-1828) married a Catherine SCHWARZENTRUBER and had the following children: Jacob KINSINGER (born 12 Sep 1807, died in Washington Co, IA); Michael KINSINGER (born 10 Oct 1814 in Hesse-Darmstadt, died 29 Jun 1895 in Woodford Co, IL).  This Michael KINSINGER married 12 Nov 1837 in Butler Co, OH, to Magdalena Nafziger, and two of his sons (Peter F. KINSINGER, born 19 Dec 1839, and Daniel O. KINSINGER, born 5 Mar 1842) married and resided in Tazewell Co, IL.  It seems likely that this family was related to Johannes KINSINGER, but nothing has been proved.  Daniel was not listed as one of Johannes and Maria Magdalena's children in the list of heirs 11 Dec 1823.

Hermann Guth's AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY states that Maria Magdalena SCHWARZENTRUBER was the daughter of Johannes SCHWARZENTRUBER:  "At the Amish conference in Essingen in 1759, the congregation of the Lower Palatinate was represented by Christian SCHWARZENTRUBER from Weisenheim am Berg and his father Johannes SCHWARZENTRUBER from Herxheim.  Christian SCHWARZENTRUBER's sister Maria Magdalena SCHWARZENTRUBER married Johannes KINZINGER; they became the progenitors of a large family that for the most part emigrated to America. According to an assessment list of 1765, Johannes KINZINGER was counted among the most wealthy residents and had also helped the local government several times with loans.  Christian SCHWARZENTRUBER moved with his son Johannes SCHWARZENTRUBER to Freinsheim." (p. 27)

THE MENNONITE ENCYCLOPEDIA corroborates as follows: "Weissenheim am Berg, in the duchy of Leiningen, Palatinate, Germany, is mentioned in the Dutch Naamlijst of 1767 as the seat of a Mennonite congregation of Swiss refugees, with Christian Jotter (Yoder) (later elder until ca 1785) and Christian SCHWARTSTRAUBEN (until ca 1785) as preachers.  The Mennonites of Weissenheim, who under the counts of Leiningen worshiped undisturbed, later formed the congregation of Altleiningen."
Guth states that "Weisenheim am Berg is a wine-growing village on the slopes of the Hardt Mountains; earlier it had belonged to the County of Leiningen."
