Descendants of John KEARNS (176?-1846)

Notes

1. John KEARNS

The surname Kearns, sometimes spelled as Kerns, Kernes, Karnes, Karns, Carnes, Cairns, Cairens, Karrens, Kerrens (and others) is probably Irish in orgin, according to family tradition.

According to the following biography, John Kearns came from Virginia.  However, his birthplace (as well as his wife's) according to son Thomas Kearns' 1880 Census data, son Hugh Kearns' 1880 Census data, and daughter Isabella Cunningham's 1880 Census data was Maryland.

A HISTORY OF KENTUCKY AND KENTUCKIANS
By E. Polk Johnson (Chicago-New York: Lewis Publishing Company), 1912:
Volume III:
pp. 1557-1558:
"John Kearns, his [William Thomas KEARNS, born 1842] paternal grandfather, a native of Virginia, followed the tide of emigration to Kentucky about 1795, and located on Two Lick pike, in Harrison county, where he purchased a tract of timber land, from which he hewed a homestead.  In common with the other pioneers of that day, he labored with unceasing toil to provide a home for his family, helping in the meantime to develop the resources of this now rich agricultural region."

HISTORY OF KENTUCKY, by William Elsey Connelley & Ellis Merton Coulter, 1922:
Volume IV:
p. 280:
"B. F. KEARNS. Rural school superintendent for Harrison County, B. F. Kearns is a veteran educator, and has given upwards of half a century to this dignified and important service to humanity.
He was born in Harrison County, October 16, 1855, a son of Thomas B. and Eliza (Fooks) Kearns. His paternal grandparents, John and Kate Kearns, were natives of Ireland, while his maternal grandfather was Benjamin Fooks, a native of England, whose wife came from the same country. These families established homes in Harrison County, Kentucky, more than a century ago, when all the country was new and civilization was just beginning in Kentucky."

[Editor's Note: John Kearns apparently left his wife and children in Harrison County and moved to Boone County, KY, before 1820.  The 1820 and 1830 Harrison County, KY, Census, showed Margaret Kearns as head of household.  John Kearns appeared in Boone County, KY, in the 1820 and 1830 Census and apparently had six children, born between 1820 and 1830, by Mildred Davis whom he did not marry until 1836.  In 1832-1833, they were indicted in Hendricks County, Indiana, for living in adultery.  By 1840, they were back in Boone County, KY, where John Karnes was listed as head of household in the 1840 Census.]

[Editor's Note:  A possible brother to John Kearns was William Kearns.  1 Jan 1799, Harrison County, Kentucky, William Kearns married Ruth Wiggins.  This family was in Harrison County in the 1810 Harrison County Census but by 1820 had moved to Daviess County, Indiana, where William Kearns, age 85, died in 1850 (appeared in 1850 Mortality Schedule, listed as born in Maryland).  William was probably a brother to John Kearns, but this is based solely on the circumstantial evidence of their ages (both born in the 1760's), place of birth (both born in Maryland), and proximity in Harrison County, KY (both married in 1790's there).  A son of this William was Rev. John Kerns, about whom the following was written --
NORTHERN MINNESOTA CONFERENCE OF 1895:

Rev. John KERNS, born Harrison County, Ky, Jan 2, 1809, died
Fullerton Neb, August 7, 1895.  68 years a minister in Methodist
Episcopal Church.
10 years old, father from Ky to Jo Daviess Co, Illinois [should probably be Daviess County, Indiana].

first wife, Edna Smith, sister of Rev. Dr. Smith; she died 1876
