Dear Son & Daughter,
I will to try to answer your kind letter I received yesterday. I was glad to hear from you all also glad to hear you were all well.  We are all well except bad colds.  We are getting along very well.  Me & Eli has got moved at last.  We are crowded too only have one room to stay in & cook in too, but we enjoy our beloved family.  Minnie, you just ought to come & see me, see how I look keeping house with Eli.  Well every body out here is late about their Farms this year.  Eli is done planting corn & is planting Cotton now.  Eli has bought him a fine Horse.  He likes his House very much.  Our Garden is backward the insects look like they will suck the plants to Death.  Minnie you & George ought to have been here last week to help me eat fish Eli bought. One weighed 6 lb Duncan one weighed 7 lbs James & Mark one weighed 16 lbs. We all eat fish for the fun of it.  I had a letter from Will & S.J. not long since.  They were all well & doing well.  They like Texas very much.  Minnie I have just had Lou to make me three new Dresses on her Machine.  We had a rite hard rains Thunder & lightning Sunday evening.  The lightning struck a tree & killed five Hogs for Mark.  He hates it rite bad. Eli STURGES

A STURGES FAMILY STORY, by Art Danforth, Feb 1982:

ELI STURGES
  "Born March 26, 1795, the son of Aaron and Sarah Morehouse STURGES.  By 1816 he had moved to Augusta, Georgia, where he first worked in a brickyard producing very rough brick.  He was then overseer of twenty negroes, and wrote that he couldn't trust them to keep the fire going and that they required 'beating about like so many oxen.'  However, he had learned how to 'manage the negroes tolerably well...did not have to whip but two.' In 1817, Eli got a job managing a river boat for Jacob Danforth, hauling cotton.  He also took a load on to New York--a quick six day passage from Savannah.  But Augusta was 128 miles up river, and he felt the lowlands around Savannah were an unhealthy place to live.  In 1822, Eli and his family lived eight miles from Oliver and Sally.  Then, or later, he had at least two sons. In 1841, he travelled west from Saratoga County, NY, to Bureau County, Illinois, with his widowed father and several brothers and sisters--including Sally, his sister and Oliver's wife.  He apparently returned to Georgia.  For on February 23, 1858, he wrote his sister Lydia in Illinois that he had a growing cancer on his face and that his eye was inflamed.  In June 1861, he could hardly eat and his nose was gone; he did not expect to live long.  But he invited Lydia to come and live with them, adding he 'was in hopes it would be settled by treaty and be no blood shed.' But in an undated letter (probably November 1863) to Ellen STURGES in Minnesota, Lydia noted Eli had two sons old enough to be in the war.  (He might also have had grandsons in it!  In either case, cousins would have fought cousins--which was not unusual.)  We have no added information."

I think Grandpa [Drury] Kendrick came from England.  His wife was
a Hollander or from Holland.  My mother left Georgia after the
civil war and went to her father who was then living near
Jackson, Mississippi.  Then Grandpa Kendrick and most of his
children moved in wagons to Texas.  Children: Georgia Ann Jordan
and husband Charles Jordan stopped in East Texas; John R.
Kendrick, James Orlando Kendrick, Mary Kendrick who was William
Kendrick's widow, Amelia Johnston my mother all settled Ringtown
or Vaughn, and afterwards scattered out.  Got to Peoria in fall
or Dec 1868.  Uncle Isiac and other brother stayed in Missisippi.
