Infomation gathered by Frederick Royer of York, PA, from Margaret Morgart's Widow's Pension Papers:
Abraham MORGART, son of Philip and Margaret (Hess) MORGART, born 20 April 1823, West Providence Twp near Everett, Bedford Co, PA; died 20 June 1865, Washington D.C. (Carver General Hospital).
Married Miss Margaret MORGRET of Bethel Twp, Fulton County (then Bedford), 12 Aug 1847, at the residence of her father in Bethel Township. Mrs. Rachel (MORGART) Snell and Mrs. Rebecca (MORGART) Barndollar were both present at the marriage and saw the ceremony performed by Samuel Haines, Justice of the Peace. She was a daughter of Peter and Esther ( ) MORGRET, and was born 2 Feb 1826.
Abraham was drafted and mustered in on February 23, 1865, for one year at Chambersburg, Penn, as a Private with Company "D" 79th Regiment of Penn Infantry. (Co D recruited in Washington Co). The soldier contracted chronic diarrhea on the march between Richmond, Virginia and Washington, D.C. by reason of exposure and heavy marching and he was admitted to Carver General Hospital, Washington, D.C., June 15, 1865 from Regimental Hospital for treatment where he died.
In addition to diarrhea, he appeared to have been attacked with homesickness and he became very much reduced before taken to the hospital. His mind appeared to be very much disturbed. One day he approached one of his Lieutenants and stated that two of his children were killed at home and that his discharge should be made out immediately. When asked how he knew that his children were killed, he replied that his afficiant, Daniel S. Bussard, had received a letter containing such intelligence. This was not the case, it was simply a hallucination of the mind.
Bartley Hughes fully stated that he and Margaret MORGRET (Mrs. MORGRET having heard her husband was laying sick at Carver Hospital) were going for the purpose of bringing said soldier home or ministering to his wants, but when they arrived at the hospital they found the soldier had died three days previous to their arrival there.
Widow's Pension Rate: $8.00 per month, commencing June 21, 1865, and additional sum of $2.00 per month for each of the following children, until arriving at age of 16 years, commencing July 25, 1866, viz. William Hess Jefferson to May 10, 1869 and last payment March 27, 1879 for Mary Alice.
Elizabeth Foor, Catharine Woy and Hetty Spencer were present at the births of Mrs. MORGRET's children, William Hess Jefferson down to Mary Alice. Hetty Spencer and Magdalene Latta both of East Providence Twp attended Mrs. MORGRET in childbirth of a daughter, Mary Alice, who was born before the arrival of the midwife and while there affiants were alone in attendance no other person was present at the time, and it was the first time in the experience of these affiants that such an adventure had happened to them. It made a deep impression upon their mind.
Widow's residence in Sept 1865 is Ray's Hill, Bedford Co (now Breezewood). Her address in July 1879 is Everett, PA.
Margaret known as "Peggy" died 6 March 1880. They are buried in the old MORGART graveyard, east of Everett on road leading to Graceville. The National Cemetery in Arlington had no record of his burial, believed his wife had his body removed.
