Notes

2. Abraham HESS

FULTON DEMOCRAT, April 16, 1925:
"HISTORICAL SKETCH
T.K. Downes Writes History of the Hess Family, Who Settled in the Lower Part of Fulton County
The Hess family are descendants of four brothers, who came from Switzerland to America and settled in Lancaster county in the year 1712 when Charles Gookin was Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania.  These people, like many other families, obeyed the Biblical injunction and their descendants are scattered in nearly every state of the Union.  I will give the names of the descendants who came to Bedford Co., now Fulton, from one of the Lancaster brothers.  He settled in Belfast township and owned several hundred acres of land.  His name was Abraham and he had 8 children, three girls and five boys, viz., William, Jeremiah, Jacob, Paul, George.  One sister married a man by the name of Mellott, another a Schooley, and one I have no history of at this time.  William had three sons and one daughter, viz., Adam settled on part of home place, was married twice.  His first wife, Sarah Hess, had one daughter, Mary Catherine, married William Rice; second wife, Dorothy Hess, had two sons and one daughter, J. Frank and Lorne and Frances married Albert Morgret of Oklahoma.
Samuel lived in upper end of county.  Jacob lived in Whip's Cove and had one daughter, Mary Ann Lake.
Miriam married Dennis Mellott and had several children, Jefferson C., Marcus, Silas, Ditha married Truax, Mary, Ella, Elizabeth and Sadie.
Jeremiah Hess married Catherine Daniels and had 11 children, viz., Aaron, David, Dennis, Abraham, Daniel, Job, Mary, Sarah Ann, Dorothy, Florinda, Matherine [sic], Aaron married Annie Garland and had children, Moses, George, of Oxford, Ind., Job, Aaron, Luther, John, Lydia, Rhoda, Cassie, Annie and Lucy.
David Hess married Mary Morton.  They went shortly after they were married to Indiana.  They made the trip all the way in a covered wagon and finally settled on Salamonie river.  They had four children, Elmira, Mary, Martha and John.
Dennis Hess married Frances Morton and had three children, Aaron, Morton and Frances.
Job Hess was married twice.  His first wife was a Hart, and his second a Decker.  Children of first wife were: Mary, wife of Albert Plessinger, Sadie, wife of Michael Mellott, and John of the West.  Second wife: Annie Paylor of the West, Fanny Mellott, of Big Cove Tannery, Emma Lake of Gem, Maggie Bard of Needmore, Alice Bard of Harrisonville, Carrie Cauff of Emmaville, George and Dennis of the West, Job, and John F. of near Andover.
Mary Hess married William Morgret.  Children of first man were: Aaron Morgret of Big Cove Tannery, Dorothy married Hart Evans, and Jane married Dennis Gordon of Sharpe.  Her second husband was Benjamin Mellott of Needmore.
Sarah Hess married Bartimeus Smith and had three children, viz., Abraham died in younger years, Catherine and Anna.  Dorothy married Adam Hess, Catherine married Thomas Hessler.
Jacob Hess married Mary Daniels and had ten children, Daniel, George, Jeremiah, Benjamin, Nelson, David, Sarah, Mary Ann, Catherine and Rebecca.
Jeremiah married Delila Smith, daughter of Rev. John Smith of Bedford Co. and had six children, Annie married Lewis Sipes.  Mary married Benjamin Bedford.  Sarah married Amos Plessinger.  Jacob on the home place and married Martha Jane Barney and had six children, Charles and Ira, of Bethel township, Albert of Whip's Cove, Mary married Alex Bradshaw, Allen and Cora dying in young man and womanhood.  Rebecca married William Mason, Susan married Doyle Hixon of Brush Creek.
George Hess married Elizabeth Sipes and had two children, Amos and Mary Martha.  This family and their descendants live in Bedford Co.
Nelson Hess married Lydia Sipes and had two children, Mary E. married James McKee, Alice married Morgan Barton.
Benjamin Hess went West.  Daniel Hess married a Miss Covalt and went West.  David Hess married Mrs. Anna Kimberlain.  Sarah married Adam Hess.  Mary Ann married Paul Deshong.  Katherine married Nathaniel Mellott and had four children, Calvin, George, Catherine, Mary Ann.  Rebecca married Jacob Hockensmith.
There will be a definite account of Lakes and the balance of Hess history next.  These are very popular families in Belfast and Bethel townships."

FULTON DEMOCRAT, April 23, 1925:
"HISTORICAL SKETCH
T.K. Downes Writes History of the Hess and Lake Families of Their First Settling in This Part of the State
We wish to state that many of the younger generations of the Hess family thought they had come from Germany but according to history they came from Switzerland.  The four brothers settled in Lancaster county.  One of these descendants settled in Virginia of which many of the Hesses came.  One to the West, one to New York and one to Bedford county, of which we gave a part history last week.
We will give a brief history of the remaining two children of Abraham Hess.  Powell lived in Maryland had three children, one son and two daughters.  Bonner married Mary Ann Hull and had several children, one was John Hess of Everett.
George Hess married a lady of Juniata county and settled in that county.  There was another Hess family of Ittica, Indiana, who was of the Hess & Harvey Wagon Manufacturers, by the name of Jacob Hess, who came from Alsace, France, owing to the close connection of this province to Switzerland, he must be of the same family."

"John Hess and Sarah, his wife, were members of the church.  He joined the church in August of 1805, and she joined the church in May of 1818.  John was born December 31, 1765, and was one of the sons of William and Margaret Hess.  Thereby, he was a brother of Abraham and Jacob, mentioned above.  He married Sarah Truax, daughter of Ensign Stillwell Truax of Ayr Township.  They resided in Bethel Township and reared a family of three sons:  William (1794-1829); Abner (1799-1829); and Stillwell Hess, mentioned above.  Sarah Hess, who was born May 18, 1776, was still living in 1850, at which time she resided with her son Stillwell and his family."

5. Jacob HESS

HISTORY OF TONOLOWAY BAPTIST CHURCH, by Harry Holman:
p. 080:
"Jacob Hess and Anna, his wife, joined Tonoloway Church in October of 1802. This was the same meeting that Abraham Hess joined the church.  Both Jacob and Abraham were the sons of William and Margaret Hess (d. 1798).  Jacob Hess served as trustee of the church.  From the census records, it can be seen that he had a large family - at least eight children - and resided in Bethel Township.  Jacob Hess transferred his church membership with Jacob Covalt and his wife Fanny in August of 1842.  There was no mention of Hess' wife at that time.  This party was at that time in the process of moving west."
