Descendants of Benjamin FOOKS (1770-1843)

Notes

1. Benjamin FOOKS

THE FOOKS FAMILY, by Herbert Fooks, 1953, lists these as the children of Benjamin and Hannah Fooks:
1. Jesse, died 1833.
2. Sarah, married (1) Mullen, (2) Prows.
3. Abigail, married Brock Jenkins, said to be mother of 20.
4. Leah, married Math Kearns.
5. Christiana, married Wilson.
6. Hannah, married Keziar Harris.
7. Harriet, married Stoker.
8. Polly, married Charlie Bayless.
9. Peggy, married Billie Kearns.
10. Eliza Jane, married Thomas Kearns.
11. Zepporah, born 1788, died 1861, married 21 Feb 1811, Worcester County, MD, to Purnell Toadvine, b. 1786, d. 1831.

[Editor's Note:  This list has some problems with it.  First, Abigail Fooks did not marry Brock (Brockman) Jenkins; she married George Abdell.  It was Charles and Mary (Polly) Bayless' daughter Abigail Bayless who married Brockman Jenkins.  Second, Leah Fooks did not marry Math Kearns; she married Richard Kearns.  Third, Keziar Harris is probably a nickname for Hezekiah Harris.  Fourth, no record of a marriage between Harriet Fooks and a Stoker can be found; however, there is a marriage record for Harriet Fooks and Benjamin Debruler.  Fifth, the death certificate of one of the children of William and Margaret (Peggy) Kearns says that Margaret's maiden name was Cunningham, so whether William Kearns' wife Margaret was a Fooks or not is in doubt.  Finally, no William Fooks appears in this list of children; yet the close proximity of William, born about 1790, to Benjamin in the early Bourbon County and Harrison County, KY, records suggests a close relationship.]

[Editor's Note:  In Benjamin Fooks' household in the 1820 Census was a boy age 0-10, and in the 1830 Census there was a boy age 10-15.  It is unknown who this boy was, but it is the Editor's guess that he might have been a Benjamin Jr.  The reason for this guess is that an 1830 Court record exempting Benjamin Fooks from the paying of tax due to his age and infirmity listed him as Benjamin Fooks Senior, implying that there may have been a Benjamin Fooks Junior living at the time.]

HISTORY OF KENTUCKY, by William Elsey Connelley & Ellis Merton Coulter, 1922:
Volume IV:
p. 280:
"B. F. KEARNS. Rural school superintendent for Harrison County, B. F. Kearns is a veteran educator, and has given upwards of half a century to this dignified and important service to humanity.
He was born in Harrison County, October 16, 1855, a son of Thomas B. and Eliza (Fooks) Kearns. His paternal grandparents, John and Kate Kearns, were natives of Ireland, while his maternal grandfather was Benjamin Fooks, a native of England, whose wife came from the same country. These families established homes in Harrison County, Kentucky, more than a century ago, when all the country was new and civilization was just beginning in Kentucky."

Hannah

[Editor's Note:  Benjamain Fooks' wife's name was Hannah when he sold land in Worcester County, Maryland, in 1803 and 1809.  Benjamin's wife's name was also Hannah when he sold land in Harrison County, Kentucky, in 1836.  However, it seems that these must have been different wives.  Zipporah Fooks was born in 1788, while Eliza Jane Fooks was born about 1822 -- a range of 35 years which is too long a time period for the same woman to have mothered both children.  The 1810 and 1820 Census are puzzling in that Benjamin Fooks appears to have no wife at either time.  It is the Editor's guess that the first Hannah died sometime between 1810 and 1820.  Therefore, it is unknown which Hannah was the mother of the children born between 1810 and 1820 (Sarah and Christiana).  No marriage record has been found for Benjamin Fooks in either Maryland or Kentucky.]

Hannah

[Editor's Note:  It appears from the 1830 and 1840 Census that Benjamin Fooks' wife at that time was born between 1780 and 1790.  An 1836 deed names Benjamin's wife as Hannah.  It is the editor's guess that this Hannah was a second wife and was the mother of Christiana, Leah, and Eliza Jane.  Since there appears to be no wife present with Benjamin in the 1820 Census, it is possible that this Hannah was a third wife, with a second wife dying between 1810 and 1820. No marriage record has been found for Benjamin Fooks in either Maryland or Kentucky.]
